Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Gorloks Improve to 2-0 in SLIAC Play

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's soccer team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Blue Jays by a final score of 2-0 to improve to 5-2-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. With the loss, Westminster drops to 3-5 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.

Webster outshot the Blue Jays 16-10 in the game and had nine shots on target compared to four from Westminster. The Gorloks also led in the corner count as they had six while the Blue Jays did not have any.

Webster came out in the first half and got off to a great start as they scored in the 14th minute of the game to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Payton Montana had the goal for Webster as she headed in a free kick from Mya Stegen for her second goal of the season. The Gorloks continued to play well as the half progressed but were unable to extend their lead as they took a 1-0 advantage into the locker room.

Webster carried over their momentum into the second half and were able to give themselves a 2-0 advantage in the 63rd minute of the contest. Grace Rodgers had the goal for Webster as she hit a beautiful shot from a tough angle off of the far post and into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the year. Mya Stegen had the assist, her second of the game and fourth of the year.

Westminster tried to get back in the game in the final stretch but the Gorloks were able to hold them off to stay unbeaten in conference play.

Courtney Haneline (5-2-1) was in goal tonight for Webster as she recorded four saves in her third solo shutout of the season.

The Gorloks will return to the pitch on Tuesday, October 3rd when they travel down Big Bend Road to take on the third ranked Washington (Mo.) University Bears. The game is set to kick off at 6:30 p.m.
