ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's soccer team was back in action this evening when they played host to the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for their first SLIAC match of the season. Webster defeated Westminster by a final score of 3-1 to improve 3-5-1 on the year and 2-0 in conference play. With the loss, the Blue Jays fall to 1-8 on the year and 0-2 in the conference.
Webster outshot Westminster 15-13 in the game as both teams put seven shots on target. The Blue Jays led in the corner count as they had nine while Webster had five.
The Gorloks found themselves in a hole early as Westminster earned a penalty in the 15
th minute of the game.
Luke Dillon stepped up for Webster and was able to save the penalty to keep the game scoreless.
Webster broke into the scoring column just a few minutes later as
Dalton Sperle finished off a pass from
Andy Mujezinovic for his first tally of the year.
Nick Thomas extended the Gorloks lead in the 26
th minute of the game as he was able to finish off a pass from
Andy Mujezinovic for his second goal in as many games.
Amar Mujezinovic finished off the scoring in the first half for the Gorloks as he found the back of the net for the second time this season.
Ian Meyer had the assist, his first of the year.
The Gorloks came out flat to start the second half and the Blue Jays took advantage as they scored less then a minute into the period to cut the lead to 3-1. The Gorloks had a few chances to extend their lead as the half progressed but were unable to capitalize. They played tough defense down the final stretch and closed out the Blue Jays to earn their first conference win of the season.
Luke Dillon (3-5-1) was the starting goalkeeper in this one as he recorded five saves in the contest.
The Gorloks will return to the pitch on Wednesday, October 4
th when they host the Washington (Mo.) University Bears for a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 7 p.m. at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
