ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's soccer team was back in action this evening when they played host to the Millikin (Ill.) University Big Blue for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Big Blue by a final score of 2-1 to improve to 1-1 on the season. With the loss, the Big Blue move to 2-1 on the year.
Webster outshot Millikin 17-12 in the contest and put seven shots on target compared to four from the Big Blue. The Gorloks also led in the corner count as they finished with six while the Big Blue had four.
In the first half of the game, the Big Blue came out and controlled the possession for most of period. They were able to get on the board in the ninth minute of the contest and held a 1-0 lead in the match. The Gorloks created a couple scoring chances in the half but were unable to capitalize as Millikin would take the 1-0 lead into the locker room.
The Gorloks continued to struggle holding possession for most of the second half but they were able to keep the Big Blue out of the back of the net as the score remained 1-0 with 10 minutes to play. Webster turned up the pressure and were able to earn a penalty kick in the 81
st minute of the game when
Mackenzie Sundhausen was tackled in the box. Sundhausen took the kick for Webster and calmly tied the score at one with her first tally of the season.
Webster was back at it again with just 12 seconds left to play as
Mya Stegen was able to find
Malaya Blakely on the back post for her second tally of the year. The Big Blue put the ball back in play in the final seconds but the damage was done as the Gorloks kept them off the board to solidify the win.
Courtney Haneline (1-1) was the starting keeper for the Gorloks as she recorded three saves in her first collegiate win.
The Gorloks will hit the road for the first time this season on Sunday, September 10
th when they travel to Lisle, Illinois, to take on the Benedictine (Ill.) University Eagles for a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at noon.
