LISLE, ILL. – The Webster University women's soccer team was back on the pitch this afternoon when they traveled to Lisle, Illinois, to take on the Benedictine (Ill.) University Eagles for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Eagles by a final score of 3-2 to improve to 2-1 on the season.
The Gorloks outshout the Eagles 19-11 in the contest and put eight shots on target compared to six from Benedictine. The Eagles led in the corner count as they had four corners while Webster had two.
Webster came out in the first half and found themselves trailing early as Benedictine scored in the eighth minute of the game to take a 1-0 lead. The Gorloks threatened all half but were unable to capitalize as the Eagles would take a 1-0 lead into the locker room.
The Gorloks turned up the pressure to start the second half and were able to tie the game just two minutes into the period.
Grace Rodgers had the goal for Webster as she was able to bring down a long ball from
Isabella Dickneite and placed her shot just out of the keepers reach and into the back of the net for her first tally of the season.
Malaya Blakely gave the Gorloks the lead in the 58
th minute of the game as she finished off a pass from
Jordan Bilyeu for her third goal of the year. She was back at it again just six minutes later as she intercepted a pass and dribbled it from midfield before slotting it into the back of the net for her second of the season.
Benedictine would cut the lead to 3-2 in the final minute of the game but Webster was able to hold them off for their second straight win.
Courtney Haneline (2-1) was in goal for the Gorloks as she recorded four saves in her second career win.
The Gorloks will return home on Friday, September 15
th when they host the University of Wisconsin-Platteville for a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 5 p.m. at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
