BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Batesville, Arkansas, to take on the Lyon (Ark.) College Scots for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by the Scots in overtime by a final score of 76-74 to fall to 8-9 on the season and 6-4 in conference play. The win moves the Scots to 10-5 on the year and 7-3 in the SLIAC.
Webster went 31-for-64 (48.4%) from the floor and 3-for-13 (23.1%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded by the Scots by a final count of 35-33 with nine rebounds coming on the offensive end. Webster forced Lyon to turn the ball over 18 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 23 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 13 assists.
The Gorloks came out in the first half and found themselves trailing 9-5 early in the game. They settled in as the half progressed and went on a 32-12 run over the next 12 minutes to take a 37-21 lead with just under four minutes to play in the half. The Scots would cut the lead to 12 late in the period, but the Gorloks would push their lead back out to 15 before taking a 40-26 lead into the locker room.
The Scots came out in the second half and cut the Gorloks lead to six in the first five minutes of the period. Webster would answer with an 11-5 run to extend their lead back to 12, but an 8-0 run from the Scots would cut the lead to 53-49 with nine minutes to play in the game. The Gorloks would push their lead back to nine over the next few minutes, but another run from the Scots would put them down two with just over a minute to play. The Scots would tie the score in the final minute and force the game to go to overtime.
In overtime, the Scots came out and scored the first four points of the period. The Gorloks would tie the score at 72, but the Scots would outscore Webster 4-2 down the stretch to solidify the win.
Karl Moore Jr. led the way for Webster as he finished with a game high 21 points and a game high 14 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.
Nate Jones also played well as he finished with 20 points and six rebounds. In addition,
Jason Coleman recorded 13 points and a team high four assists while
Josh Luster added seven points.
The Gorloks will return home for their next game on Wednesday, January 24
th when they host the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for a conference matchup. The game is set to start at 7:30 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
