LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this evening when they traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks fell to the Golden Eagles by a final score of 67-64 to drop to 9-11 on the season and 7-6 in the SLIAC. With the win, Spalding improves to 10-9 on the year and 9-4 in the conference.
The Gorloks went 22-for-59 (37.3%) from the floor and 7-for-23 (30.4%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded by a final count of 45-34 with 12 rebounds coming on the offensive end. They forced the Golden Eagles to turn the ball over 12 times in the contest while racking up nine steals. Webster also dished out 12 assists while blocking 10 total shots.
In the first half of the game, both sides came out and had a tough time finding the bottom of the basket. Webster would settle in as the half progressed and held a 12-6 lead with 13 minutes to play in the period. Spalding would tie the score at 16 over the next few minutes, and the score would remain tight for most of the half. With the score tied at 25, Spalding would end the half on a 7-3 run and took a 32-28 lead into the locker room.
Spalding carried over their momentum into the second half and quickly grew their lead to 16 with just over 16 minutes to play in the game. The Gorloks would answer with a 21-10 run to cut the lead to five, but another run from Spalding would put them up 12 with seven minutes to play. Despite being down, the Gorloks clawed their way back into the contest and were able to cut the lead to two in the final minute of the game. Webster would try their best to pull off the comeback but they fell just short as the Golden Eagles held them off to solidify the win.
Jalen Davis led the team offensively as he finished with a career high 17 points.
Karl Moore Jr. also had a great game as he finished with eight points and a team high eight rebounds to go with a game high nine blocks. In addition,
Josh Luster had 14 points,
Alpha Diallo finished with eight points, and
Jason Coleman added seven points to round out the top performers for the Gorloks.
The Gorloks are back on the road for their next game when they travel to Elsah, Illinois, on Saturday, February 3
rd for a SLIAC matchup against Principia (Ill.) College. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
