LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 25
th ranked Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this evening when they traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Golden Eagles by a final score of 84-63 to improve to 20-0 on the season and 13-0 in conference play. With the loss, Spalding drops to 9-11 on the year and 7-6 in the SLIAC.
With the win today, the Gorloks have reached the 20-win mark for the third straight season and the sixth time in program history. This also marks just the second time in program history that the team has started with a perfect 20-0 record.
The Gorloks went 31-for-75 (41.3%) from the floor and 2-for-14 (14.3%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded by a final count of 47-37 with 14 rebounds coming on the offensive end. They forced the Golden Eagles to turn the ball over 33 times in the contest and turned those turnovers into 35 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 14 assists while racking up 20 steals.
Webster came out in the first quarter and found themselves trailing 11-6 in the first four minutes of the game. The Gorloks settled in as the quarter progressed and ended the frame on a 10-5 run to tie the score at 16 heading into the second. They would carry their momentum over into the second and started the period on a 9-0 run to give themselves a 25-16 lead. The Golden Eagles would cut the lead to six, but a 16-5 run from Webster to end the half would put them up 41-24 at the break.
The Gorloks came out of the locker room and quickly extended their lead to 20. They continued to play well over the next few minutes and would push their lead to as many as 29 before taking a 67-42 lead into the fourth. They would extend their lead out to as many as 33 in the fourth and cruised to their 20
th straight win to start the season.
Emily Wilson led the way for Webster as she finished with a career high 25 points to go along with a team high eight rebounds.
Julie Baudendistel also played well as she finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. In addition,
Bethany Lancaster finished with 11 points,
Kate Rolfes added 10 points, and
Claire Williams finished with seven points to round out the top performers for Webster.
The Gorloks are back on the road for their next game when they travel to Elsah, Illinois, on Saturday, February 3
rd for a SLIAC matchup against Principia (Ill.) College. The game is set to start at 1 p.m.
