ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this evening when they played host to the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Golden Eagles by a final score of 76-55 to improve to 4-8 on the season and 2-3 in conference play. With the loss, Spalding drops to 4-7 on the year and 3-2 in the SLIAC.
Webster went 30-for-62 (48.4%) from the floor and 5-for-16 (31.3%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded by the Golden Eagles by a final count of 45-41 with 10 rebounds coming on the offensive end. The Gorloks forced Spalding to turn the ball over 17 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 16 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 18 assists while recording 12 steals.
Webster got off to a great start in this one as they went on a 15-1 run in the first five minutes of the game to take an early lead. The Golden Eagles answered with a 16-4 run of their own to cut the lead to two, but an 11-2 run from the Gorloks would put them up 29-19 late in the half. They would get outscored 7-4 down the final stretch of the period and would take a 33-26 lead into the locker room.
The Gorloks once again got off to a great start in the second half as they went on a 28-9 run in the first 10 minutes of the period to grow their lead to 61-35. They would push their lead out to as many as 28 over the next few minutes and never let the Golden Eagles back in the game as they played tough defense throughout the half to solidify the win.
Webster had 12 players find the bottom of the basket including
Karl Moore Jr. who finished with a team high 17 points and game high 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
Jemard Sykes II and
Jason Coleman also finished in double figures as they each finished with 10 points and four assists. In addition,
Booker Simmons recorded nine points while
Josh Luster pulled down seven rebounds.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, February 6
th when they host the Principia (Ill.) College Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to tip-off at 3 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
