WU’s Scott Price Nets Late Goal In Shutout Victory Over Spalding

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's soccer team continued SLIAC play by hosting Spalding University Saturday afternoon. WU's Scott Price netted a free kick in the 83rd minute as the Gorloks defense shut out the top-ranked SLIAC Golden Eagles by the final score of 1-0. With the victory, the Gorloks improve to 5-4-2 overall and 2-1-2 in conference play.

In the opening 10 minutes of action, the Gorloks controlled the possession of the ball with crisp passing and attacked the offensive side of the pitch that resulted in two corner kicks. In the eighth minute, Patrick Fuller had a great opportunity to crack the scoring but his shot was saved by SU's goalkeeper Micah Mattes.

In the 12th minute, the Golden Eagles countered with a strong attack that resulted in a shot by Eddie Mendez-Perez but was saved by WU's goalkeeper Luke Dillon. Shortly later, in the 21 minute, the Gorloks were awarded a corner kick that resulted in a shot by Elmin Lemes. For the next three minutes, Webster added three shots; two shots by Fuller and one by Lemes but all shots were blocked by SU's defenders.

In the 29th and 32nd minutes, the Gorloks advanced the ball in the attacking zone as Price blasted two shots as both attempts went wide. Webster added four shots for the remainder of the first half that included two by first-year Logan Hazel, one by Ian Meyer, and another by senior Jack Thompson. However, the match remained scoreless at the halftime intermission.

In the opening minutes of the second half, the Gorloks passed the ball down the field resulting in shots by senior Chase Boushard and fifth-year Noah Abraham as both attempts went out wide. In the 61st minute, Webster had another scoring opportunity as the header attempt by Logan Hazel went out high. Three minutes later, Amar Mujezinovic ripped a shot on goal but it was saved by Mattes.

Webster and Spalding battled for the next 20 minutes of play that included two Gorlok shots by Hayden Hatley and Lemes but the match remained scoreless.

With seven minutes remaining in the match, the Gorloks were awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box when Price blasted a left-footed rocket to the bottom left corner that found the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.

In the 86th minute, the Golden Eagles had a late offensive push that resulted in a shot by Mendez-Perez but Dillon eliminated the scoring chance with a fantastic save. That save by Dillon helped capture his second shutout of the season.

For the match, Fuller, Hazel, and Price led the offensive attack with three shots each while Thomson added two. Defensively, the Gorloks held SLIAC goal leader Mustafa Almohammedawi scoreless while Dillon recorded a match-high seven saves.

The Gorloks will hit the road to Blackburn College on Wednesday, October 16 for a conference match starting at 3:30PM in Carlinville, Illinois.
