Gorloks Extend Unbeaten Streak To Four Matches With Shutout Victory Over Spalding

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's soccer team closed out a three-match SLIAC homestand and extended their unbeaten streak to four matches with a 3-0 shutout victory over Spalding University on Saturday. With the victory, the Gorloks improved to 8-1-3 overall and rank first in the SLIAC standings with a league record of 3-0-1.

WU's junior forward Mayrin Soto recorded a career-best performance that included her first career multi-goal performance with two goals and recorded an assist for a career-high five points.

In the opening minutes of the match, the Gorloks came out very aggressive and pressured the Golden Eagles defense that resulted in four corner kicks. On the fourth corner kick, in the seventh minute, Soto sent in a fantastic cross that resulted in a header goal by defender Isabella Dickneite for the early 1-0 advantage. That goal by Dickneite marks her third of the season.

On the ensuing Spalding kickoff, the Golden Eagles countered with an offensive attack that resulted in a shot by the SLIAC goal leader in Emma Livingston but WU's goalkeeper Courtney Haneline made the save.

For the next 15 minutes of action, the Gorloks added three shots in the match as two came off the boots of Soto and one by Riley Cappozzo that resulted in two saves by Su's goalkeeper Olivia Bosch.

In the 23rd minute, senior Mackenzie Sundhausen won the 50-50 goal kick near midfield when she delivered a beautiful through pass to Soto in stride. Two touches later, Soto ripped a left-footed shot that hit the top of the crossbar and went straight down for the goal that gave the Gorloks the 2-0 lead. Webster and Spalding battled back-and-forth for the remainder of the half with scoreless play that kept the Gorloks at the 2-0 advantage.

The Golden Eagles opened the second half with possession and sent the ball into Gorlok territory that resulted in a shot wide by Jaelyn Dodson. Shortly later, in the 51st minute, Webster responded with an offensive attack which earned a corner kick but was halted by a foul.

For the next 20 minutes of play, the Gorloks and Golden Eagles battled between the endlines with scoreless play as the match became much more physical. In the 71st minute, on a Gorlok attack, Soto collected the ball near the endline in the attacking box when she blasted a right-footed dart over SU's Bosch to the left post for her second goal of the match.

For the remainder of the match, Webster and Spalding battled back-and-forth with scoreless action as Haneline added another save to her night. As a team, the Gorloks captured their fifth shutout of the season.

For the match, Soto led the offensive attack with five shots while Dickneite, Cappozzo, and Mia Smith each recorded one shot each. Defensively, the Gorloks allowed only one shot to Livingston while Haneline recorded three saves.

The Gorloks will continue SLIAC play with a road trip to Blackburn College on Wednesday, October 16 starting at 1:00PM in Carlinville, Illinois.
