Gorloks Extend Unbeaten Streak To Five Matches With Shutout Victory Over Blackburn

CARLINVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University women's soccer team continued conference play with a visit to Blackburn College Tuesday afternoon. The Gorloks extended their unbeaten streak to five matches with a 12-0 shutout victory over the Beavers. With the victory, the Gorloks improve to 9-1-3 overall and remain undefeated in conference play with a 4-0-1 record.

WU's Jasmine Hubbard recorded her first career multi-goal performance with two goals while Mia Smith collected her second multi-goal performance of the season by scoring two goals.

Three Gorlok defenders in Reyce Reller, Isabelle Schumacher, and Elliana Seiter recorded their first goal of the season. The goals scored by Schumacher and Seiter mark their first collegiate goal in a Gorlok uniform.

On the starting kickoff, the Gorloks advanced the ball in the attacking zone that resulted in a shot by Grace Rodgers that went left. Two minutes later, Rodgers blasted another shot towards the net as that shot hit off the crossbar and back in play with no rebound shot.

The Gorloks struck first on the scoreboard in the seventh minute on a goal by Lucy Elfrink that was assisted by Mayrin Soto. Less than three minutes later, Webster was awarded a corner kick when Rodgers sent in a fantastic ball to the back post as the clearout attempt by Blackburn was miskicked for an own goal for the 2-0 lead.

For the next 15 minutes of play, the Gorloks blasted a plethora of shots towards the net and capitalized on a one-timer by Emily Buchholz in the 27th minute that was assisted by Seiter. Less than five minutes later, first-year Mia Smith blasted a rocket to the back of the net that was assisted by Claire Thurmond for the 4-0 lead.

In the 35th minute, Blackburn sent the ball into Gorlok territory which resulted in a shot by Theresa Smith as Courtney Haneline recorded the save. That shot by Smith would end up being the only shot of the match for Blackburn. Shortly later, the Gorloks won another 50-50 goal kick and turned up field. Seconds later, Isabella Schumacher sent in a beautiful cross that resulted in a header-goal by Rodgers.

Webster continued to display great passing and attacked the offensive side of the pitch. Seconds later, Thurmond collected the ball, took a few dribbles, and blasted a right-footed dart to the left post for a goal. Less than two minutes later, Smith closed out the first half with her second goal of the match as the Gorloks took the 7-0 lead into halftime.

The Gorloks opened the second half with back-to-back shots by Sophie Thoman as both attempts were saved by BC's goalkeeper Mailee Shoen. In the 53rd minute, Hubbard collected the ball just outside the 18-yard box, turned, and blasted a shot toward the net as found the back of the net. Less than six minutes later, Hubbard secured her second goal of the match with another shot on goal.

In the 64th minute, the Gorloks continued to show dominant passing skills when Thoman found Reller in stride when Reller ripped a laser to the back of the net for her first goal of the season. Webster added their final two goals of the match in the final five minutes that came off the boots of Schumacher and Seiter as the assists on those plays were credited to Seiter and Lorelli Barajas respectively.

For the match, the Gorloks outshot the Beavers 47-1 as 31 shots were on goal. Leading the way for the Gorloks was Rodgers with eight as Reller added six. Defensively, the Gorloks only allowed one shot as Haneline had a quiet night.

The Gorloks will play their final home match of the season on Saturday, October 19 against Lyon College starting at 1:00PM for Senior Day.
