Gorloks Secure Third Consecutive Shutout With Victory Over Lyon On Senior Day

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's soccer team continued conference play by hosting Lyon College Saturday afternoon for Senior Day. The Gorloks earned their third straight shutout with a 9-0 victory over the Fighting Scots. With the victory, the Gorloks improve to 10-1-3 overall and remain undefeated in conference with a 4-0-1 record.

Prior to the match, the Webster women's soccer coaching staff led by Head Coach Luigi Scire, honored seven incredible seniors for their hard work and dedication to the program over the past four years. The seven seniors honored included Mya Stegen, Mackenzie Sundhausen, Isabella Dickneite, Sophie Thoman, Grace Rodgers, Reyce Reller, and Emily Buchholz as all seniors got the start at their respective positions.

In the first five minutes of the match, the Gorloks attacked the offensive side of the pitch that resulted in four shots all by seniors; two by Stegen and one each from Buchholz and Rodgers. Shortly later, Webster had another scoring opportunity off the foot of Stegen but her shot was saved by Lyon's goalkeeper Sydney Wolf. Less than a minute later, Malaya Blakely ripped a shot on net but it was collected by Wolf.

In the 23rd minute, Reller sent the ball into the attacking zone when Rodgers advanced the ball with a header-flick pass to Blakely. Seconds later, Blakely got her revenge with a left-footed strike to the back of the net which opened the scoring for the match as Rodgers was credited with the assist.

For the next 13 minutes of play, Webster and Lyon battled between the endlines that included seven shots but the score remained 1-0. In the 37th minute, Mia Smith intercepted a pass by a Lyon defender when she found Soto near the box. Seconds later, Soto blasted a left-footed shot over Wolf's head for her fifth goal of the season for the 2-0 lead.

Just 27 seconds later, the Gorloks sent the ball back to the offensive side of the pitch when Jasmine Hubbard made an incredible offensive cut toward the net when she blasted a dart to the right post for a goal. That goal by Hubbard marks her third goal in the past two matches. For the remainder of the first half, the Gorloks and Fighting Scots battled back-and-forth with scoreless play as Webster took the 3-0 advantage to halftime.

Just two minutes into the second half, the Gorloks earned a corner kick when Rodgers sent in a beautiful entry that resulted in a header-goal by Buchholz. Five minutes later, Rodgers collected the ball and found Sundhausen in stride at the top of the box when Sundhausen ripped a right-foot shot to the left post for a goal for the 5-0 lead.

Shortly later, Lyon displayed great passing and advantaged the ball in Gorlok territory for a scoring opportunity that resulted in a shot by Nataly Furne which was saved by Courtney Haneline. That shot by Furne ended up being the only shot of the match for the Fighting Scots.
In the 62nd minute, Thoman collected the ball in the attacking zone when she dribbled through two Lyon defenders when she ripped a shot to the back of the net for her first goal of the season and second in her Gorlok career.

For the next 17 minutes of action, the Gorloks added four shots in the match as two shots by Claire Thurmond and Soto were on goal as Wolf secured both saves. In the 79 minute, WU's Smith collected the ball from Riley Cappozzo at the top of the box when she sent a left-footed rocket to the back of the net for the 7-0 advantage.

Eight minutes later, Smith dribbled the ball near the attacking box when she did a give-and-go with Cappozzo when Smith used the outer-portion of her right foot and kicked the ball in the back of the net for her second goal of the match as Cappozzo recorded back-to-back assists. The Gorloks scored their final goal of the match in the final minute when Lucy Elfrink sent in a cross when Soto blasted a left-footed one-timer to the right post for her second goal of the match.

For the match, the Gorloks outshot the Fighting Scots by the margin of 37-1 which was led by Rodgers and Stegen with six each. In the assist statistical category, Rodgers and Cappozzo recorded career-highs with three and two assists respectively. Defensively, Webster held a very strong line and only allowed one shot to the Fighting Scots that led to a calm night for Haneline.

The Gorloks will continue SLIAC play with a visit to newly-added Mississippi University for Women on Friday, October 25th starting at 12:00PM in Columbus, Mississippi.
