Gorloks Extend Unbeaten Streak To Seven Matches With 3-0 Shutout Over MUW

COLUMBUS, Miss. - The Webster University women's soccer team continued SLIAC play with their first visit to newly added Mississippi University for Women Friday afternoon. The Gorloks extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches with a 3-0 shutout victory over the Owls. 

WU's Claire Thurmond achieved her second multi-goal performance of the season by scoring two goals. With the victory, Webster improves to 11-1-3 overall that includes an undefeated 6-0-1 conference slate. 

In the opening minutes of play, the Gorloks advantaged the ball into the attacking zone that resulted in a shot by Payton Montana but was saved by MUW's goalkeeper in Alex Moon. Shortly later, in the 14th minute, the Gorloks answered with another offensive attack when Malaya Blakely blasted a shot on goal but was saved by Moon. 

In the 23rd minute, the Gorloks were awarded a penalty kick when Sienna Inouye stepped up and took the penalty kick but her shot attempt was saved by Moon that kept the match scoreless. Immediately following the penalty kick, Webster was awarded a corner kick when Grace Rodgers sent in a great entry ball that resulted in a shot that went off the top of the crossbar by Isabella Dickneite.  

Shortly later, in the 28th minute, the Gorloks had two scoring opportunities from Mackenize Sundhausen as both her shot attempts was saved by Moon. For the next 10 minutes of play, Webster added three shots in the match as the shots were taken by Claire Thurmond, Isabella Schumacher, and Mia Smith

However, the Gorloks capitalized in the 39th minute when Thurmond blasted a shot in the back of the net that was assisted by Lorelli Barajas for the 1-0 advantage. Four minutes later, in the 43rd minute, the Gorloks attacked the offensive side of the pitch when Lucy Elfrink found Thurmond near the box when Thurmond ripped a shot to the back of the net for the 2-0 lead. Webster went into the halftime break with the two-goal advantage.  

Two minutes into the second half, the Gorloks advanced the ball into the attacking zone when Riley Cappozzo found Sundhausen near the box when Sundhausen darted a shot in the net for her fifth goal of the season that gave Webster the 3-0 lead. 

For the next 20 minutes of action, the Gorloks added three shots on goal led by Montana with two as Rodgers added one but all three shots attempts were saved by Moon. Shortly later, in the 75th and 76th minutes, the Gorloks had two additional scoring opportunities on shots by Mayrin Soto and Sophie Thoman but both attempts were saved by Moon. 

In the final 10 minutes of the match, Webster earned two corner kicks and added three shots on goal but all shot attempts were saved by Moon. 

For the match, Sundhausen and Smith led the offensive attack with four shots each while Elfrink, Cappozzo, and Barajas each recorded one assist. Defensively, Haneline was targeted once all match as she collected the save for a quiet afternoon.
 
The Gorloks will close out the regular season with a visit to Westminster College on Wednesday, October 30 starting at 5:30PM in Fulton, Missouri.
