Gorloks Conquer Five-Set Thriller Over Greenville For Sixth Straight Victory

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University volleyball team opened a three-match road stand and continued conference play with a visit to Greenville University Tuesday evening. The Gorloks conquered a five-set battle against the Panthers and earned a huge road victory by the final score of 3-2. With the victory, the Gorloks improved to one-game over .500 with an overall record of 10-9 that includes a 4-4 conference record.

Webster and Greenville started this SLIAC match exchanging points that rallied to a tie at seven apiece. Moments later, the Gorloks took the four-point advantage with a 5-0 run that started on a kill by Tarlos. In the run, Lauren Harms added two service aces while Leah McGrath recorded an assisted block and a kill to the set-score of 12-8. The Panthers quickly countered with a 5-1 run that tied that set at 13 apiece.   

The Gorloks and Panthers continued to battle back-and-forth as both teams exchanged kills to the set-score 16-15. In those three points to get to 16, Megan Zablonski contributed two kills while Grace White slammed one down. Webster and Greenville continued the set with 3-0 runs to the one-point Gorlok lead at 19-18. 

With the set tied at 22 apiece, the Panthers achieved set-point with back-to-back points. However, the Gorloks countered with a 4-0 run that closed out the set which started on a kill by Zablonski and capped off with a kill by White. 

The Gorloks jumped out to an early 4-1 advantage in the second set that included back-to-back service aces by Ellie Biedenstein and another kill by Tarlos. The Panthers immediately answered with a 4-0 run that gave WU the 5-4 deficit. On the next service, Tarlos and Zablonski started a 4-0 Gorlok run with an assisted block and White collected a solo block for the 8-5 lead. 

Shortly later, Greenville answered with a 5-1 run that put the Panthers on top at 11-10.  Both teams kept the battle tight and rallied the set to a tie at 21 apiece. In that span, Webster gained points on kills from Alyssa Jones, Tarlos, McGrath, Delaney Morio, and Harms. The Gorloks closed out the set with a 4-1 run that included kills by McGrath and Tarlos for the 2-0 match advantage.  

In the middle stanza set, the Gorloks got off to a 3-1 advantage on back-to-back kills by McGrath. However, the Panthers erupted for a 7-0 run that was eventually snapped on a kill by White to the set-score of 4-8. Both teams continued to fight and rallied as Jaycee Lewis cut the deficit to three at 9-12 with a kill. 

Webster and Greenville would continue the set with back-and-forth action that rallied to a five-point deficit at 12-17. The Panthers immediately answered with a 6-0 run and later scored the final two points with kills to take the set.  

The fourth set opened with both teams exchanging kills to a tie at three apiece. The Gorloks took the early 9-5 advantage with a 6-2 run that included kills by Harms, Jones, White and Zablonski. The Panthers countered with a 5-1 run that tied the set a 10 apiece. Webster and Greenville battled the set to a tie at 17 apiece as both teams rallied off 3-0 runs.

The Panthers countered with a 4-2 run that created a two-point deficit at 19-21. The Gorloks evened the set at 21 apiece that included a kill by Tarlos. However, Greenville closed out the set with a 4-0 run which forced a fifth set. 


The winner-take-all set started off with a 3-1 Webster advantage that included back-to-back kills by McGrath and Tarlos. Moments later, Greenville constructed a 4-0 run but was countered with a 4-0 Gorlok run to the set-score of 7-5. Both teams continued to fight and rallied the set to a tie a nine apiece. Moments later, the Gorloks closed out the match with a 6-1 run that included a kill by Harms, an assisted block by Jones and Tarlos, as McGrath added the final point with a kill.   

For the match, White led the offensive attack with 12 kills while first-year's McGrath and Tarlos contributed 11 kills each. Setter's Biedenstein and Morio combined for 37 assists as Biedenstein led with 26. Defensively, Lewis led with a match-high 25 digs while Tarlos contributed four assisted blocks.

The Gorloks will continue this three-match road stand with a visit to Augustana College for a non-conference match on Thursday, October 17 starting at 6:00 PM in Rock Island, Illinois.
