ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's soccer team resumed conference play by hosting Lyon College for their home finale Saturday afternoon at World Wide Technology Soccer Park. The Gorloks secured their third consecutive shutout and battled the Fighting Scots to a scoreless draw. With the draw, the Gorloks stand at 6-4-3 overall and 3-1-3 in conference play.
In the opening six minutes of the match, the Gorloks sent the ball into the attacking zone for a great scoring opportunity as the shot by Noah Abraham which was saved by Lyon's goalkeeper Gabriel Rangel. Four minutes later, the Fighting Scots countered with an offensive attack that resulted in a shot wide by Matheus Nunes.
Shortly later, in the 27th minute, Webster had another great scoring opportunity when Hayden Hatley blasted a shot on net but his shot was saved by Rangel. Moments later, the Fighting Scots put together an offensive attack that resulted in two shots by Tiago Donadon as both attempts went out wide.
In the 34th minute, Lyon added another offensive attack to the match that resulted in a shot by Gustavo Giesbretcht which was saved by Luke Dillon. In the final minutes of the first half, the Gorloks countered with an offensive attack when Amar Mujezinovic ripped a shot on net but it was saved by Rangel. Webster and Lyon went into the halftime intermission scoreless.
Lyon opened the second half with possession and passed their way into Gorlok territory which resulted in a shot by Eric Oliveria that missed inches wide left. Shortly later, in the 55th minute, the Fighting Scots added another shot on net which was collected by Dillon.
In the 71st minute, the Gorloks countered with a great offensive attack that resulted in a rocket of a shot that missed just high. A minute later, Webster sent the ball back into the attacking zone that resulted in a foul by Lyon just outside the box in center field. Moments later, Elmin Lemes blasted a shot that went just over the crossbar that kept the match scoreless.
Five minutes later, in the 77th minute, Lyon was awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box by Webster. On the penalty kick by Luca Cirigliano, he scored but both teams were called for offsetting fouls as the goal was called off. On the second attempt by Cirigliano, Dillon made an incredible diving save that kept the match scoreless.
Shortly later, in the 84th minute, the Gorloks attacked the offensive side of the pitch that resulted in a great scoring chance by Scott Price but his shot went out wide. In the 87th minute, Webster earned a corner kick that resulted in a header-shot by Frank Homa that went out wide right that ended the match scoreless.
For the match, Price led the offensive unit with two shots while seven other student-athletes recorded one shot each. In net, Dillon secured three saves.
The Gorloks will continue conference play with a road trip to the state of Mississippi on Friday, October 25th to face off against the Owls of Mississippi University for Women starting at 3:30PM in Columbus, Mississippi.
