Three Gorloks Secure First Career Multi-Goal Performances In Shutout Victory Over Red Devils

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's soccer team opened a three-game St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (SLIAC) homestand with a dominant 10-0 shutout victory over the Red Devils of Eureka College Wednesday night. Three first-year student-athletes in Claire Thurmond, Lucy Elfrink, and Mia Smith recorded their first multi-goal performances of their Gorlok careers. With the victory, the Gorloks improve to 7-1-2 overall and 2-0 in SLIAC play.

In the opening minutes of play, the Gorloks pressured the Red Devils defense with a strong offensive attack that resulted in a shot by Payton Montana. Moments later, Webster substituted in Thurmond into the game and less than two minutes later, Thurmond opened the scoring for the match with her third goal of the season that was assisted by Grace Rodgers and Sienna Inouye

Just three minutes later, in the seventh minute, Elfrink blasted a left-footed rocket to the back of the net that was assisted by Jasmine Hubbard which increased the lead to 2-0. Two minutes later, Elfrink recorded her first career multi-goal performance as she found the back of the net as Rodgers was credited with the assist.

In the 16th minute and on a set corner kick, Rodgers blasted a fantastic entry kick to the back post that bent over Eureka's goalkeeper head for a goal for her sixth goal of the season. Less than a minute later, the Gorloks sent the ball back into the attacking zone when Montana blasted a rocket to the back of the net for her team-leading seventh goal of the season. For the next 28 minutes of action, Webster and Eureka battled between the endlines that resulted in scoreless play.

However, in the 40th minute, Webster attacked the offensive side of the pitch when Smith blasted a shot to the back of the net for a goal that increased the lead to 6-0. In the final minutes of the first half, Smith delivered a fantastic pass near the box to Emily Buchholz when Buchholz rocketed a shot in the net for her first goal of the season that gave the Gorloks the 7-0 advantage at halftime.

In the 52nd minute, the Gorloks were awarded a free kick roughly 10 yards outside the 18-yard box when senior Mya Stegen ripped a dart to the upper right corner of the net that resulted in a goal for her second goal of the season.

In the 68th minute, Thurmond dribbled the ball through two Eureka defenders and blasted a shot in the back of the net for her first career multi-goal performance.

In the 84th minute, the Gorloks were awarded a corner kick when Mayrin Soto sent in a beautiful entry kick that got batted out to top of the box when Smith blasted a one-timer to the right post for a second goal of the match that generated the final score.

For the match, the Gorloks recorded a total 21 shots on goal and 17 corner kicks. Defensively, Webster did not allow a single shot to Eureka as the SLIAC Defensive Player of the Week from last week in goalkeeper Courtney Haneline had a calm night in the net.

The Gorloks will continue this homestand for the middle stanza decision against Greenville University on Saturday, October 5 starting at 1:00PM at WorldWide Technology Soccer Park.
