WU’s White Achieves Career-High Kills In Defeat To Blackburn

CARLINVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University women's volleyball team opened a three-match conference road stand with a road trip to Blackburn College Wednesday night. The Gorloks battled but ultimately dropped this match by the final score of 1-3. WU's Grace White was an offensive force at the net as she achieved a career-high 16 kills. 

The Gorloks opened the match with a 3-0 run that included kills by Lauren Harms, Leah McGrath, and Eva Tarlos. However, the Fighting Beavers answered with a 6-2 run as McGrath's kill tied the set at six apiece. 

Webster and Blackburn continued the set by rallying back-and-forth to a one-point deficit at 10-11. Moments later, the Gorloks countered with a 4-1 run that took the 14-12 lead. However, Blackburn closed out the set with a 13-4 run as the Webster points came from kills by Tarlos and Harms.  

The Fighting Beavers jumped out to an early 7-1 advantage in the second set but the Gorloks cut the deficit down to two at 7-9 with two 3-0 runs. In the combination of both runs, Delaney Fullenkamp hammered down two kills while Tyler Ramstack and White added one kill each. Moments later, Blackburn countered with a 7-0 run to the set-score of 7-16.

The Gorloks answered with a 3-0 run that included kills by White and Harms while Cassie Gray capped it off with a service ace that made the set-score 10-16. Shortly later, Webster cut the deficit to three at 18-21 with an 8-3 run. In the run, Tarlos added two kills while Fullenkamp, Megan Zablonski and White tallied a kill each. 
The Gorloks closed out the set with a 7-1 run that started on a kill White. In the run, White added another kill while Gray earned another service ace. In addition, Harms and White recorded an assisted block as Olivia Powell evened the match at one apiece with a kill. 

Webster and Blackburn opened the third set exchanging points to a 5-4 Gorlok advantage that included two 2-0 runs by both teams. The Fighting Beavers took the lead 5-9 with a 5-0 run. Immediately following that BC run, the Gorloks countered with a 7-0 run which regained the lead at 12-9. In the run, Delaney Morio recorded three service aces as White hammered down two kills while Jaycee Lewis recorded her first kill of the match. 

However, Blackburn answered with a 10-4 run as McGrath cut the deficit to two at 17-19 with a kill. After a 3-0 run by the Fighting Beavers, White cut the deficit to three at 19-22 with back-to-back kills. Blackburn scored the final three points of the set with a 3-1 run for the set-advantage.  

The Gorloks and Fighting Beavers opened the final set with a back-and-forth battle as the set rallied to a one-point Gorlok advantage at 7-6. Moments later, Blackburn answered with a 9-3 run that made the set-score 10-15 as Tarlos and Harms added kills for Webster. 

With a four-point deficit at 13-17, the Gorloks erupted for a 8-1 run which regained the lead at 21-18. The run started on a kill by Powell as White added three kills when it was capped off with back-to-back kills by Morio and Harms. However, the Fighting Beavers countered with a 4-0 run as a kill by White tied the set at 22 apiece. 

Webster and Blackburn battled back-and-forth as both teams achieved set-point. Moments later, the Fighting Beavers scored the final two points of the set that ultimately won the match. 

For the match, White led the offensive attack with match-high 16 kills while Tarlos contributed 10. Setters Ellie Biedenstein and Morio combined for 41 assists which was led by Biedenstein with 22. Defensively, Lewis recorded a team-high 21 digs while Biedenstein and Harms secured 13 each while White recorded three assisted blocks.  

The Gorloks will close out this three-match road stand participating in the Westminster College Tri-Match on Saturday, October 26 starting against Spalding University at 12:00PM which will be followed up with the host, Westminster College at 2:00PM in Fulton, Missouri.
