Three Gorloks Achieve Career-High’s In Road Victory Over Griffins

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University volleyball team continued SLIAC play with a short visit to Fontbonne University Thursday night. The Gorloks dropped the first set but responded with three straight set victories that defeated the Griffins by the final score of 3-1. First-year's Eva Tarlos and Leah McGrath recorded career-high kills led by Tarlos with 17 as McGrath slammed 13. Defensively, Grace White recorded a career-high six blocks while Jaycee Lewis collected a game-high 26 digs. 

Webster and Fontbonne opened the match exchanging points that included back-to-back kills Alyssa Jones and Tarlos and two kills from McGrath to a tie at seven apiece. 

The Griffins answered with a 4-0 run that was snapped on a kill by McGrath as Megan Zablonski added a kill immediately after that to cut the deficit down to two at 11-9. Fontbonne countered with a 4-1 run but the Gorloks took three of them back with a 3-0 run that made the set-core 14-17. 

Late in the set, the Gorloks rallied for a 3-0 run that included back-to-back kills by Tarlos. However, the late push fell just short as the Griffins took the first set by the score of 25-22. 

The Gorloks opened the second set with three kills by McGrath that led to the early 5-3 advantage. However, Fontbonne countered with a 3-0 run that was capped off with a kill by Delaney Morio that tied the set at six apiece. 

Moments later, the Griffins erupted for a 6-0 run that was eventually snapped on an assisted block by Maggie Stanford and White that made the set-score 8-12. After a kill by Fontbonne's Maura Oge, the Gorloks cut the deficit down to two at 11-13 on three consecutive kills by Jones, McGrath, and Tarlos. 

Two plays later, Webster cut the deficit down to one at 16-17 with a 5-2 run that included back-to-back kills by Tarlos and McGrath and capped off with a kill by Lauren Harms

Webster and Fontbonne exchanged points to a three-point deficit at 20-23. However, the Gorloks countered with five consecutive points that included two kills by McGrath and a kill by Tarlos as the kill by Harms tied the match at one set apiece. 

The Gorloks and Griffin opened the third set exchanging points to a tie at four apiece. Webster added four consecutive points but Fontbonne tied the set back up at nine apiece with a 5-0 run. 
Moments later, the Griffins generated a 5-1 run that increased the deficit to four at 12-16. 

With the same margin of four at 15-19, Webster erupted for a 9-1 run that started on a kill by McGrath to set-point. In the run, White recorded three assisted blocks while adding a kill. In addition, Jones added two blocks as Morio added a kill. Webster's Zablonski closed out the set with a kill that gave the Gorloks the 2-1 set advantage.  

The Gorloks jumped out to an early 6-1 advantage that included kills by Zablonski, Tarlos, White, and Harms. Shortly later, the Griffins cut the lead down to two at 9-7 with a 4-0 run. Webster immediately countered with a 5-1 run that started on a kill by Zablonski that was capped off with a service ace by Biedenstein for the 14-8 lead. 

However, Fontbonne chipped back in the set with a 6-0 run that tied the set at 14 apiece. The Gorloks regained the lead to 20-15 with a 6-1 run that started on a kill by Tarlos as Harms and White each added a kill in the run. The Griffins answered with a 4-0 run that cut the lead down to one at 20-19. Late in the set, Webster countered with a 5-1 run as the service ace from Harms closed out of the match for the victory. 

For the match, Tarlos and McGrath achieved double-digit kill marks while Biedenstein recorded a team-high 26 assists. Defensively, three Gorloks captured double-digit dig marks led by Lewis with 26 while Biendenstein collected 18 as Cassie Gray added 13. 

The Gorloks will have just one day off of competition before hosting the Gorloks Tri-Match this Saturday, October 5 starting against Nebraska Wesleyan University at 10:00 AM in Grant Gymnasium.
