Gorloks Volleyball Secure Sweep With Straight Set Victories At Home Tri-Match

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University volleyball team continued non-conference play by hosting the Gorloks Tri-Match on Saturday in Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks captured a sweep on the day that featured a pair of straight set victories over Nebraska Wesleyan University and Hannibal-LaGrange University. With the victories, the Gorloks extended their win streak to four matches and improved to 8-9 overall on the season.

Match #1: Webster 3, Nebraska Wesleyan 0

The Gorloks opened the first match of the day with a kill by first-year Eva Tarlos that was assisted by Ellie Biedenstein. Moments later, the Prairie Wolves countered with a 3-0 run that generated the deficit of 1-3. Shortly later, Webster regained the advantage with a 8-2 run to the set-score of 10-6. In the run, Alyssa Jones slammed down two kills while Grace White added a kill, and was capped off by an assisted block by Tarlos and Jones.   

Nebraska Wesleyan battled back and cut the Gorlok advantage down to one at 12-11 with a 5-3 run. Immediately following the Prairie Wolves run, the Gorloks countered with a 6-1 run to the set-score of 18-12. In the run, Leah McGrath and White each tallied a kill while Delaney Morio captured a service ace. It was capped off with a block by White.

Late in the set, the Prairie Wolves cut the Gorlok lead down to three at 22-19 but Webster closed out the set with a 3-1 run as Megan Zablonski added the final point with a kill for the 25-20 set victory.  

Webster opened the second set with a 7-1 run that included three kills by Tarlos as McGrath and Lauren Harms each added a kill. The Gorloks and Prairie Wolves rallied the set to the set-score 9-5 that included 2-0 runs by both teams. Moments later, the Gorloks extended their lead to nine at 15-6 with a 6-1 run that featured three kills by White and a kill by Jones.

Moments later, the Prairie Wolves fought back and rallied the set to a three-point Gorlok advantage at 19-16 with a 10-4 run. Immediately following NWU run, Webster achieved set-point with a 5-1 run as Harms gave the Gorloks a 2-0 set advantage with a kill for the 25-19 set victory. 

The Gorloks began the final set with a 8-0 run that started on a kill by McGrath. In the run, Harms laid down three service aces while Tarlos added back-to-back kills. It was capped out by a service ace by Harms. 
 
The Gorloks and Prairie Wolves rallied the set to a Gorloks lead at 14-11 that included several 3-0 runs by both teams. Moments later, Webster gained the 17-11 advantage after three errors by NWU. With a four-point advantage at 18-14, the Gorloks added four consecutive points to the set-score 22-14 that started on a kill by Zablonski which was capped off with back-to-back service aces by Jaycee Lewis. After a kill by McGrath, Jones closed out the match for the Gorloks with back-to-back kills.

For the match, the offensive attack was led by White with nine kills as Jones and Tarlos added seven each. The duo of Biedenstein and Morio achieved double-digit assist marks led by Biedenstein with 14 as Morio contributed 10. Defensively, Morio and Lewis captured 10 digs each while White recorded two blocks. 

Match #2: Webster 3, Hannibal-LaGrange 0

The Gorloks and Torjans opened the match with a back-and-forth battle as the set rallied to a one-point Webster advantage at 10-9. Moments later, Webster answered with a 7-1 run that started on a kill by Harms. In addition, Zablonski added back-to-back kills as Harms added a service ace that was eventually capped off with a kill by White for the 17-10 lead. Both teams continued to fight as the set rallied to a 20-13 Webster advantage. The Gorloks closed out the first set with a 5-1 run that included a kill by White. 

Hannibal-LaGrange opened the second set with back-to-back points but the Gorloks countered with a 4-0 run for the 4-2 advantage. In the run, McGrath and Zablonski added a kill as Harms capped off the run with back-to-back service aces. 

The Trojans knotted the set at four apiece with consecutive points but the Gorloks answered with a 3-0 that included kills by Tarlos, White and McGrath to the set score of 7-4. Both teams continued to battle as the set rallied to a three-point Webster lead at 15-12. 

The Gorloks immediately countered with a 5-0 run to the set score of 20-12 that was capped off with back-to-back service aces by Lewis. Webster captured set-point with a 3-0 run that started on back-to-back kills by White as Cassie Gray capped off the run with a service ace. The Gorloks closed out the set with a kill by White for the early 1-0 match advantage. 

Webster opened the final set with a service ace by Biedenstein that was followed up with a kill by Harms and White for the 5-2 advantage. Moments later, the Gorloks erupted for a 7-0 run to the nine-point lead at 12-3 that started on a kill by White. Also in the run, Zablonski added two kills while Morio added a service ace. 

Both teams rallied off separate 2-0 runs and rallied the set to a 15-8 Webster lead. The Gorloks increased their lead to double-digits with a 5-0 run to 20-8 that included kills by McGrath and Tarlos. Late in the set, Tarlos added two more kills to her day while Delaney Fullenkamp gave the Gorloks match-point with a solo block. Webster captured the match that concluded with a kill by White.  

For the match, White led the Gorloks with 10 kills as Zablonski added eight. The duo of Biedenstein and Morio combined for 32 assists led by Biedenstein with 17. Defensively, Lewis collected a team-high 10 digs while Delaney Fullenkamp and Zablonski added two blocks each. 

The Gorloks will revert back to conference play on Friday, October 11 hosting Mississippi University for Women starting at 6:00 PM in Grant Gymnasium.
