Men’s Soccer Advance To SLIAC Tournament With Draw To Westminster

FULTON, Mo. - The Webster University men's soccer team closed out the regular season with an in-state road trip to Westminster College Wednesday evening. The Gorloks battled the Blue Jays to a 1-1 draw which finished the regular season with an overall record of 7-4-4 which includes a 4-1-4 conference record. With this draw, the Gorloks will be the third-seed in the 2024 SLIAC Tournament.

The Gorloks and Blue Jays opened the match battling for possession with back-and-forth play. In the third minute, Webster added the first shot of the decision off the foot of Andy Mujezinovic but the shot was blocked by a WC defender. Shortly later, in the ninth minute, the Gorloks constructed an offensive attack that resulted in a great scoring chance by Scott Price but his shot was saved by WC's Toby Hughes. 

Moments later, in the 11th minute, the Gorloks orchestrated a great offensive drive to the attacking zone when Elmin Lemes blasted a shot in the net for the 1-0 advantage. That goal by Lemes marked his fourth goal of the season. Less than two minutes later, the Gorloks sent the ball back into the attacking zone that resulted in a shot on goal by Price but his shot was saved by Hughes. 

Ten minutes later, in the 23rd minute, the Gorloks had another great scoring opportunity when Hayden Hatley ripped a shot on net but the shot was saved by Hughes. For the remainder of the first half, Webster battled the Blue Jays with a high defensive line which led to the one-goal advantage at halftime. 

In the 52nd minute, the Blue Jays countered with an offensive attack that resulted in a fantastic save by Luke Dillon. However, four minutes later, the Blue Jays tied the match  at one apiece with a penalty kick goal by Niklas Olsson. Shortly later, in the 61st minute, the Gorloks had another great scoring opportunity that resulted in a shot by Lemes but it went out wide left. Three minutes later, Webster added another offensive drive when Noah Abraham ripped a shot but it went out right. 

In the 71st minute, Webster sent the ball back into the attacking zone that resulted in two shots on goal by Lemes and Patrick Fuller but WC's Hughes saved both attempts. For the next 15 minutes of play, the Gorloks and Blue Jays battled fiercely with scoreless play. 

With less than four minutes remaining in the match, the Gorloks had a great scoring opportunity when Noah Thomas ripped a shot toward the net but it was blocked by a WC defender. In the final minute, Hatley added the final shot of the match for the Gorloks but his shot was blocked by a Blue Jay defender for the draw.  

For the match, Lemes led the offensive attack with four shots while Hatley and Price added three each as Dillon recorded two saves. 

The Gorloks will host the SLIAC Quarter Finals match on Saturday, November 2 facing off against Westminster College at 1:00PM in Fenton, Missouri.
