Gorloks Sweep Golden Eagles To Advance To SLIAC Semifinals Match

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Webster University volleyball team opened SLIAC post-season play with the quarterfinals match against Spalding University Thursday evening. The Gorloks battled the Golden Eagles to a 33-31 final set victory that generated a sweep by the final score of 3-0. With the victory, Webster advances to the semifinals match against top-seeded Greenville University.  

Webster and Spalding opened the match exchanging points to a two-point Gorlok advantage at 6-4. In that stretch of points, Megan Zablonski contributed two kills while Alyssa Jones, Delaney Morio and Olivia Powell added one kill each. Moments later, the Gorloks answered with a 5-1 run that took the 11-6 advantage. In the run, Grace White added two kills while Powell hammered down one and capped off with a solo block by Jones. 

Immediately following the WU run, Spalding countered with a 7-2 run that tied the set at 13 apiece. Both teams continued the set exchanging points to a tie at 16 apiece. Moments later, the Gorloks answered with a 4-0 run that took the 20-16 lead. In the run, Eva Tarlos and Powell connected on an assisted block while Tarlos added a kill. 

The Golden Eagles battled back and cut the lead down to one at 22-21 with a 5-2 run as Leah McGrath contributed a kill for the Gorloks. Two points later, Webster achieved set-point that included back-to-back kills by Powell and White. White closed out the set with another kill that earned the 25-22 set victory. 

Spalding opened the second set with consecutive points for the early 2-0. On the services of Morio, the Gorloks answered back with a 5-0 run that started on a kill by Zablonski. In addition to the Zablonski kill, White and McGrath added an assisted block as White added a kill. Zablonski capped off the run with a service ace for the 5-2 lead. 

For the next several points, Webster and Spalding exchanged points as the Gorloks took to the 10-7 advantage. Moments later, the Golden Eagles tied the set at 10 apiece with a 3-0 run. Immediately following the Spalding run, Webster countered with a 7-1 run that increased the lead to 17-11. In the run, Zablonski added a service ace and a kill while McGrath and White hammered down a kill each. 

Webster and Spalding continued to battle back-and-forth as Spalding cut the Gorlok lead down to four at 21-17 with a 7-4 run. With the four-point lead, the Golden Eagles tied the set at 21 apiece with a 4-0 run. However, the Gorloks closed out the set with a 4-0 run that included two kills by Jones and one by White for the 25-21 set victory. 

The Gorloks opened the final set with the early 3-2 advantage that included a service ace by Lauren Harms and another kill by Jones. Moments later, the Gorloks and Golden Eagles exchanged two separate 3-0 runs that rallied the set to a tie at 10 apiece. In that stretch of points, Zablonski added another kill and service ace to her night while Jones and Harms contributed one kill each. 

With a one-point Gorlok deficit at 14-13, the Golden Eagles connected with a 4-0 run that generated a 18-13 deficit. Webster answered right back with a 4-1 run that cut the deficit down to two at 19-17. In the run, McGrath added two kills as Powell contributed one kill while Tarlos capped it off with a solo block. 

Following consecutive points by Spalding, Webster regained the lead at 22-21 with a 5-0 run. In the run, Harms and White contributed one kill each as the duo connected together for an assisted block. Moments later, the Golden Eagles achieved set-point with a 3-1 run but the Gorloks took that right back and achieved set-point at 25-24. 

At set-point, Spalding reclaimed the advantage at 26-25 with back-to-back points. After both teams exchanged points to the one-point Golden Eagle lead at 28-27, the Gorloks took the 29-28 lead that included a kill by Tarlos. Moments later, Spalding answered back with a 3-1 run that took the 31-30 advantage. However, the Gorloks closed out the match with a 3-0 run that included back-to-back kills by Harms.

For the match, White led the offensive attack with nine kills while ones and Powell added seven each. Defensively, White recorded a team-high two assisted blocks while Cassie Gray collected 13 digs.

The Gorloks will travel to top-seeded Greenville University on Saturday, November 16 for the semifinals match starting at 2:00PM in Greenville, Illinois
