Gorloks Fall To Fourth-Ranked Bears

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's basketball team opened a four-game homestand hosting the fourth-ranked Bears of Washington University of St. Louis Tuesday evening in Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks dropped this non-conference matchup by the final score of 94-66. 

On the opening tip-off, the Gorloks earned the possession as sophomore Jonah Hibbert got the scoring started with a basket in the paint. One minute later, Justin Ugo gave the Gorloks the 4-2 advantage with a layup. Moments later, Hibbert gave the Gorloks the 6-4 advantage with his second basket of the game. 

Webster and WashU continued this non-conference decision exchanging baskets as the Bears took the 10-7 advantage on a layup by Drake Kindsvater. Moments later, WU's Jemard Sykes II answered with five straight points for the Gorloks which included a three-point basket and a pair of free throws for the 12-10 lead. 

The fourth-ranked Bears found their shot from behind the arc and countered with a 15-0 run that was eventually snapped on a basket by Sykes II that made the score of 14-25. Moments later, St. Louis native, Josh Luster added back-to-back baskets for the Gorloks which made the score 18-30. 

However, WashU answered with a 7-0 run to the score of 18-38 but was snapped on mid-range jumper by Sebastain Reed as that basket was his first of the season. The Bears closed out the first half with a 9-3 run as Ugo added all three points for the Gorloks which generated a halftime score of 23-47.  

Webster and WashU opened the second half exchanging baskets that included back-to-back three-point baskets by Hibbert and Luster. Moments later, senior Alpha Diallo filled the points column with consecutive baskets in the paint. Over the next three minutes of play, the Gorloks added back-to-back baskets that included a layup by Reed and another three-point basket by Sykes II. Midway through the second half, the Bears countered with a 16-4 run which included a jumper in the paint by Reed and a pair of free-throws by Luster. 

With seven minutes remaining in the game, sophomore Will Burroughs connected on a basket in the paint for his first basket of the game. Shortly later, WU's Andrew Hall scored his first points as a Gorlok with a jumper. In the final three minutes of the game, first-year Cooper Kelley knocked a pair of deep three-point baskets which was his first baskets of his Gorlok career. In addition, sophomore Amarien Mohair recorded his first points of the season with a jumper in the paint while adding four straight points at the free-throw line.     

For the game, Sykes II recorded his second straight double-figure scoring performance as he led the Gorloks with 10 points while Luster, Hibbert, and Reed all contributed nine points apiece. At the glass, Ugo led the team with six rebounds while tying Grahovic with one block each. 

The Gorloks are set to host the Webster Classic this Friday and Saturday, November 22 and 23 with contests against Centre College and Illinois Wesleyan University.
