Gorloks Secure Split At Home Tri-Match With Victory Over Fontbonne

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University volleyball team hosted their second tri-match of the season that featured two conference matches against Fontbonne University and Westminster College on Saturday in Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks opened the day with a dominant 3-1 victory over the Griffins which was followed up with a five-set defeat at the hands of the Blue Jays. 

Match #1: Webster 3, Fontbonne 1

The Gorloks opened the match with the 8-4 advantage that included kills by Eva Tarlos, Megan Zablonski, and Alyssa Jones. Moments later, the Griffins answered with a 3-0 run that cut the lead down to one at 8-7. Immediately following the Fontbonne run, Webster countered with a 6-2 run for the 14-9 lead that started on a kill by Grace White. In addition, Jones added back-to-back kills while Lauren Harms and Tarlos contributed a kill each. 

Fontbonne chipped back in the set and erupted for a 10-3 run that generated a two-point deficit at 19-17. However, the Gorloks countered with a 7-0 run that achieved set-point. In the run, White added two kills while Harms and Delaney Morio tallied a kill each. Jones closed out the opening set with a kill that took the early 1-0 advantage. 

Webster and Fontbonne started the second set exchanging points to a 3-2 Gorlok lead. Moments later, the Griffins took the 6-3 advantage that featured a 4-0 run. The Gorloks quickly answered with a 5-2 run as a kill by Olivia Powell tied the set at eight apiece. 

The Gorloks and Griffins continued the set by exchanging points as another kill from White tied the set at 12 apiece. Following the kill by White, Fontbonne responded with a 6-2 that generated the four-point deficit at 18-14. The Gorloks cut the deficit down to two at 19-17 with a kill by Tarlos. However, the Griffins closed out the set with a 6-0 run that evened the match at one apiece.

Webster and Fontbonne began the third set exchanging points that included 3-0 runs by both teams to two-point Griffin advantage at 9-7. Moments later, the Gorloks regained the lead at 14-9 with a 7-0 run that included two service aces by Tarlos. Immediately following the Webster run, Fontbonne answered with a 7-2 run that tied the set at 16 apiece.    

Both teams continued to battle back-and-forth as the set rallied to a tie at 19 all. After consecutive points by Fontbonne, Webster achieved set-point with a 5-1 run that included two kills by White and service ace by Tarlos. First-year Harms closed out the set with a kill that gave the Gorloks the 2-1 match advantage. 

The Gorloks and Griffins began the final set exchanging points as Fontbonne took the early 4-2 lead. Moments later, Webster regained the lead at 6-4 with a 4-0 run that included kills by Zablonski, Powell, and Tarlos. However, the Griffins countered with a 7-1 run that generated a four-point deficit at 11-7. Both teams continued to battle back-and-forth as the set rallied to the same deficit margin at 15-11. 

In the middle of the set, the Gorloks erupted for a 12-1 run that took the 23-16 advantage. In the run, the Gorloks used a balanced attack that featured five kills and five blocks. The kills were led by Tarlos with three while Jones and Zablonski added one each. Defensively, Jones and Tarlos tagged teamed for two assisted blocks each while Jones, Tarlos, and Zablonski recorded one solo block each. Tarlos closed out the match with two kills that generated the 12th victory of the season. 

For the match, Tarlos led the offensive attack with 14 kills while Jones and White hammered down 12 apiece. Setter Morio and Ellie Biedenstein combined for 46 assists led by Morio with 25. Defensively, Lewis collected a team-high 18 digs while Jones recorded four blocks.  


Match #2: Webster 2, Westminster 3

The Gorloks opened the night-cap decision against Westminster in early deficit at 9-6 that included two kills by Tarlos. Moments later, the Blue Jays constructed a 8-2 run that took the 17-8 advantage. Immediately following the WC run, Webster got three of those points back on back-to-back kills by Zablonski while Tarlos added one that made the set-score 17-11. 

Webster and Westminster continued the set by exchanging points that rallied to the set-score 23-15. Moments later, the Gorloks cut the deficit to four at 23-19 with a 4-0 run that included a kill from White and a service ace by Morio. However, the Blue Jays closed out the set by scoring the final two points with two kills. 

Webster opened the second set with the early 6-3 advantage that included two kills by Jones while Leah McGrath added a kill as Jones and White recorded an assisted block. The Gorloks increased their lead to six at 11-5 with a 5-1 run that included kills by Tyler Ramstack and Harms while White added a solo block. 

Both teams continued the set with back-and-forth play as the Gorloks took the 14-10 lead. Moments later, Webster took the nine-point advantage at 20-11 with a 6-1 run that featured a service ace by Lewis and kills by Tarlos and McGrath. Moments later, the Gorloks achieved a double-digit lead at 24-14 and later tied the match at one set apiece on an attacking error by the Blue Jays.

Westminster opened the middle stanza set with the 9-4 advantage. However, Webster countered with a 6-0 run that started on back-to-back kills as McGrath added a kill that took the 10-9 lead. With the three-point Gorlok advantage at 15-12, the Blue Jays answered with a 5-1 run that generated a one-point lead at 17-16. 

Moments later, the Gorloks regained the lead at 21-19 that included three kills by Tarlos. In the late portion of the set, the Blue Jays achieved set-point with a 5-1 run. Immediately following the WC run, Webster answered back and tied the set at 24 apiece with an assisted block by Jones and White. The Gorloks closed out the set by scoring the final three points which all came from Jones that included two kills and a solo block. 

Westminster opened the fourth set with the early 5-3 advantage but Webster answered with a 6-1 run that took the 9-6 advantage. In the run, McGrath contributed two points with a kill and a service ace. In addition, Ramstack and Tarlos added another kill to their day. 

The Gorloks and Blue Jays continued the set with back-and-forth action and rallied the set to a three-point Webster lead at 15-12. Moments later, the Blue Jays countered with a 5-1 run that took the 17-16 lead. Five plays later, Harms tied the set at 19 apiece with a kill. However, Westminster closed out the set with a 6-0 run that forced a fifth set. 

In the winner-take-all set, the Blue Jays took the early 4-3 advantage. Moments later, the Gorloks took the 7-4 lead with a 4-0 run that started with back-to-back kills by McGrath. In addition, Biedenstein added a service ace while Ramstack and Tarlos capped it off with an assisted block. 

Shortly later, the Gorloks took the four-point advantage at 12-8 with a 4-1 run that included kills by Harms and Ramstack. However, the Blue Jays closed out the match with a 7-1 run that generated the split on the day. 
 
For the match, Tarlos once again led the offensive attack as she recorded 11 kills while McGrath contributed 10. Setters Morio and Biedenstein tallied a total of 43 assists led by Morio with 23. Defensively, Harms led with 15 digs while White recorded six blocks. 

The Gorloks will play their final non-conference match of the season hosting Monmouth College on Tuesday, November 5 starting at 6:30PM in Grant Gymnasium.
