Moore Jr’s Double-Double Not Enough In Loss To Monmouth

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's basketball team concluded action at the 2024 Webster Classic with a non-conference decision against Monmouth College Saturday afternoon in Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks battled the Fighting Scots fiercely but drop this decision by the final score of 70-66. WU's Karl Moore Jr. led the Gorloks by recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds. 

In the opening five minutes of play, Webster and Monmouth exchanged baskets that led to a one-point deficit at 8-7. In that stretch, three different Gorloks scored a basket which came from Moore Jr, Josh Luster, and Gabe Mccrary. Shortly later, Webster answered with a 7-0 run that took the 16-12 lead. In the run, Reed contributed five consecutive points while Justin Ugo capped it off with a lay-in. 

At the 7:11 mark in the first half, the Gorloks countered with a 9-0 run that started on a driving layup my Mccrary. Moore Jr capped off the run with seven straight points that gave Webster the 28-16 advantage. Moments later, Monmouth responded with a 7-0 run that cut the lead down to five at 28-23. Webster and Monmouth closed out the first half trading baskets as the Gorloks took the 34-30 lead to halftime.  

The Gorloks and Fighting Scots opened the second half right where they left off as both teams exchanged baskets that generated the score to 42-36. In that stretch, Jemard Sykes II scored eight straight points for the Gorloks that included two three-point baskets. Moments later, Monmouth countered with an 8-0 run that was eventually snapped on a Moore Jr lay-in that tied the game at 44 apiece.  

For the next five minutes of play, Webster and Monmouth continued to battle back-and-forth and traded baskets as a dunk by Alpha Diallo tied the game at 52 apiece. Moments later, the Fighting Scots put together a 8-2 run that generated a six-point deficit at 60-54. On the next two Webster possessions, senior Mccrary and Moore Jr cut the deficit down to two at 60-58 with back-to-back baskets.

With less than four minutes to go, Sykes II knocked down another three-point basket that kept the deficit at two at 63-61. However, the Fighting Scots responded with a 5-0 run that increased the deficit to seven at 68-61. The Gorloks added their final points of the game on baskets from Sykes II and Diallo while Reed added a free-throw. 


For the game, three Gorloks achieved double-digit scoring marks led by Moore Jr with 18 points while Sykes II contributed 15 points while Reed added 11. At the glass, Moore Jr secured a game-high 12 rebounds while Reed hauled in six. Defensively, Reed recorded a game-high three steals while Moore Jr added one block.

The Gorloks will have a three-week break from competition for the holidays and will resume play in 2025 with a visit to Westminster College for a conference decision on Saturday, January 4 starting at 3:00PM in Fulton, Missouri.
