Gorloks Suffer First Loss Of Season To Hornets In Music City Classic Finale

GALLATIN, Tenn. - The Webster University women's basketball team concluded tournament play at the Music City Classic hosted by Welch College Friday evening. The Gorloks battled the Hornets but suffered their first loss of the season by the final score of 68-55.  

The Gorloks opened this non-conference decision exchanging baskets that generated a one-point deficit at 10-9. In that stretch, Emily Wilson started the scoring with conventional three-point play as she drained the free-throw shot. Moments later, Wilson added a driving layup when Bethany Lancaster got her night started with a lay-in. Wilson capped out the back-and-forth action with a layup. 

Immediately following the layup by Wilson, the Hornets responded with a 8-0 run that increased the deficit to nine at 18-9. In the final minutes of the first quarter, Nysa Gilchrist contributed a basket in the paint while Lancaster added back-to-back. The Hornets made the final basket of the quarter that generated a seven-point deficit at 22-15

The Hornets opened the second quarter with a 11-2 run that included baskets by Rylee Denbow and Meghan Illingworth to the score of 33-19. WU's Wilson closed out the first half scoring with four consectives points that generated a halftime deficit of 35-23. 

The Gorloks and Hornets opened the second half trading baskets that included a basket by Wilson to the score of 39-25. Moments later, Lancaster responded with four consecutive points that cut the deficit down to 10 at 39-29. Approximately one minute later, Wilson answered with five consecutive points that included a three-point basket that kept that margin at 10 at 44-34. 

Midway through the quarter, the Hornets countered with a 7-0 run that made the score 51-34. However, the Gorloks closed out the quarter with a 6-0 run on baskets from Emily Kerce and Gilchrist that cut the deficit down to 11 at 51-40. 

WU's Lancaster opened the final quarter with five consecutive points that cut the deficit to 10 at 56-46. Moments later, the Gorloks answered with a 7-0 run that cut the deficit down to five at 58-53 on seven straight points by Denbow. However, the Hornets closed out the game with a 10-2 run that generated the final score.    

For the game, Wilson led the Gorloks with 18 points while Lancaster contributed 16 points and secured a team-high nine rebounds. In addition, Denbow recorded nine points as Gilchrist added six while Kerce contributed four. 

The Gorloks will have a 10-day break for Christmas and will return back to non-conference play on December 30 hosting Knox College at 3:00PM in Grant Gymnasium
