Gorloks Extend Conference Win Streak To Three Games With Double-Digit Victory Over MUW

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's basketball team continued conference play by hosting newly-added SLIAC member, the Owls of Mississippi University for Women Saturday afternoon in Grant Gymnasium. Four Gorloks achieved double-figure scoring that led to a 79-66 victory over MUW. With the victory, Webster is off to a perfect 3-0 start in conference play that includes three straight wins over conference opponents.  

In the opening minutes of action, the Gorloks got off to a slow start offensively as the Owls took the early 11-4 lead that included points by Karl Moore Jr. and Josh Luster. Moments later, Jonah Hibbert started a 7-1 run with a three-point basket as Sebastian Reed followed up with a mid-range jumper. First-year Cooper Kelly capped off the run with a fastbreak layup that cut the deficit down to one at 12-11.

Midway through the half, the Owls countered with a 7-2 run that increased the deficit to six at 19-13. On the next Gorlok possession, Justin Ugo started an 11-3 run with a jumper in the paint. Moments later, Reed and Josh Luster added baskets in the paint when Jemard Sykes II followed up with a three-point basket that tied the game at 22 apiece. Senior Gabe Mccrary capped off the run with a layup which gave Webster the 24-22 lead. The Gorloks closed out the first half with a 7-4 run that included another three-point basket from Sykes II, a layup by Moore Jr, and a pair of free-throws by Ugo for the 31-29 halftime advantage. 

Webster opened the second half with an 11-2 run that started on a three-point basket by Sykes II. Moments later, Moore Jr drained a pair of free-throws which was followed up with back-to-back three-point baskets by Luster and Sykes II for the 42-31 advantage. Less than a minute later, the Gorloks increased their lead to 21 at 56-35 with a 14-2 run. In the run, Moore Jr added a layup when Sykes II followed up with eight consecutive points. Shortly later, Ugo contributed a basket in the paint while Reed capped off the run with a pair of free-throws. 

Midway through the second half, Webster and MUW exchanged baskets as Reed kept the same advantage of 21 at 68-47 with a pair of free-throws. With under six minutes to go, the Gorloks achieved their biggest lead of the game of 22 at 74-52 on a layup by Sykes II. In the final two minutes, Webster added their final five points of the game on baskets from Amarien Mohair and Booker Simmons while John Renken sank a free-throw. 

For the game, Sykes II tied his career-high with 24 points while shooting five-of-eight from behind the arc. In addition, Moore Jr. recorded his third double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds while Reed added 11 points. Ugo closed out the double-figure scores with 10 points while securing five rebounds off the bench. 

The Gorloks will continue this four-game homestand hosting the Webster Classic on Friday, December 13 starting against Central Christian College (Kan.) at 8:00PM in Grant Gymnasium.
