ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled down the street to Fontbonne (Mo.) University to take on the Griffins for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by the Griffins by a final score of 86-75 to fall to 11-12 on the season and 9-7 in conference play. With the win, the Griffins move to 16-7 on the season and 11-5 in the SLIAC.
The Gorloks went 27-for-69 (39.1%) from the floor and 3-for-16 (18.8%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded by the Griffins by a final count of 42-35 with 17 rebounds coming on the offensive end. They forced the Griffins to turn the ball over 15 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 14 points on the other end of the floor. The Gorloks also dished out nine assists while blocking four shots.
Webster came out in the first half of the game and found themselves trailing 14-4 after five minutes of action. They settled in over the next few minutes and cut the lead to six, but a 13-2 run from the Griffins would put them up 29-14 midway through the half. The Gorloks would outscore the Griffins 20-13 down the final stretch of the period and Fontbonne would take a 42-34 lead into the locker room.
Webster would carry their momentum over into the second half and started the period on a 11-3 run to cut the Griffins lead to five. Fontbonne would extend their lead back to 10 over the next few minutes, but 6-2 run from Webster would put them down six midway through the half. The Griffins would answer with a 16-7 run of their own to extend their lead back to 15, and held off the Gorloks down the stretch to solidify the win.
Karl Moore Jr. led the way for Webster as he finished with 14 points and a game high 13 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season.
Jason Coleman also played well as he finished with a game high 18 points to go along with five rebounds. In addition,
Jemard Sykes II finished with eight points and a team high four assists while
Justin Ugo added eight points.
The Gorloks will return home for their final two games of the regular season starting with a matchup on Thursday, February 15
th against the Mississippi University for Women. The game is set to start at 7:30 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
