Gorloks Drop First Two Games in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Webster University softball team kicked off their season today in Memphis, Tennessee, when they took on the Maryville (Tenn.) College Scots and the Rhodes (Tenn.) College Lynx for a nonconference doubleheader. The Gorloks dropped both games of the doubleheader as they fell to the Scots by a final score of 5-1 and then fell to the Lynx by a final score of 9-1 (5 innings) to drop to 0-2 on the season.

The Gorloks put together four hits in their first game of the day against the Scots. After two scoreless innings, Maryville got on the board in the bottom of the third to take a 1-0 lead. They would add a run in the bottom of the fourth, and two runs in the bottom of the fifth, to take a 4-0 lead in the game. The Gorloks would get on the board in the top of the sixth off an RBI double from Paige Thomas, but one more run from the Scots in the bottom half of the frame solidified the win from Maryville.

Reese Waggoner (0-1) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed six hits and four earned runs while striking out three in 5.0 innings. Ainsley Hinz pitched in relief as she allowed just one hit and one earned run in the final inning of the game.

Paige Thomas led the way at the plate for Webster as she went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Katie Croxall, Emma Bovaconti, and Reese Waggoner recorded the other three hits for Webster.

In their second game of the day, Webster put together seven hits in the loss. The Lynx got on the board first as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. The Gorloks cut the lead in half in the top of the third after an RBI single from Lili Work, but three runs in the fourth, and four runs in the fifth, from the Lynx solidified the win from Rhodes.

Braidyn Burr (0-1) was starting pitcher in this one as she allowed eight hits and five earned runs while striking out three in 4.0 innings. Madi Stichling pitched in relief as she allowed five hits and four earned runs in the final 0.1 inning of the game.

Lili Work led the way at the plate as she went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Katie Croxall also had a great game as she went 3-for-3 with a run scored. Aurora Lomheim and Ainsley Hinz recorded the last two hits for Webster.

The Gorloks will return to the diamond tomorrow, February 18th for two games in Memphis. They will take on the Maryville (Ill.) College Scots at 10 a.m. and then take on Rhodes (Tenn.) College at 2 p.m.
