MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Webster University softball team was back in action yesterday when they took on the Maryville (Tenn.) College Scots and the Rhodes (Tenn.) College Lynx for a nonconference doubleheader. The Gorloks defeated Maryville (Tenn.) College in their first game of the doubleheader by a final score of 11-3 and then tied their second game against Rhodes (Tenn.) College 12-12 before the game was called in the ninth inning due to light. Webster moved to 1-2-1 on the season.
The Gorloks bats came alive in their first game against the Scots as they exploded for 12 hits in the contest. After finding themselves trailing 3-0 through first inning and a half, Webster was able to get on the board in the bottom of the second thanks to a sacrifice fly from
Kaelyn Kearney. The Gorloks would tie the score in the bottom of the fourth, and then exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to solidify their first win of the season.
Cheyenne Dickens (1-0) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed just six hits and three earned runs while striking out three in her first complete game of the season.
Kaelyn Kearney led the way at the plate for Webster as she went 2-for-2 with five RBI and a run scored.
Katie Croxall and
Reese Waggoner also had great games at the plate as Croxall went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI while Waggoner went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. In addition,
Alyssa Lyell went 1-for-4 with an RBI,
Emma Bovaconti went 1-for-1 with an RBI, and
Sidney Holtz went 1-for-3 with an RBI to round out the top performers for the Gorloks.
In their second game of the day against Rhodes, Webster got on the board in the top of the first as
Madi Stichling drew a walk with the bases loaded to give Webster a 1-0 lead. The Lynx would respond with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, but a three-run rally from the Gorloks in the top of the second gave Webster a 4-1 advantage. Rhodes would tie the score in the bottom of the third, but an RBI single from
Lili Work in the top of the fourth would give the Gorloks the lead back. The teams exchanged runs over the next few innings and the Gorloks found themselves trailing 10-9 heading into the seventh. The Gorloks would retake the lead in the top of the seventh on a two-run double from
Kaelyn Kearney, but a late run from the Lynx would send the game to extras. The teams would each score a run in extra innings before the game was called due to light.
The Gorloks will play their home opener next Saturday, February 24
th when they host Hanover (Ind.) College for a nonconference doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 1 p.m. with the second to follow at St. Joseph's Academy.
