Gorloks Split SLIAC Regular Season Home Series Against Panthers

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University softball team closed out the SLIAC regular season by hosting Greenville University for a doubleheader on Thursday. The Gorloks dropped the opener 3-6 but captured a split over the Panthers with 6-4 victory in the regular season finale. With the split, the Gorloks improved to 12-4 overall in SLIAC play.  

Game 1: Webster 3, Greenville 6
First-year pitcher Kailey Rushman got the start in the circle and got in a jam with a walk, stolen base, and that runner advanced to third. With one out, Greenville took the early 1-0 lead with an RBI single. Rushman got out of the inning with a lineout to third. 

In the bottom of the first, Isabelle Loiben led off with a walk as Sophie Errante advanced Loiben to second. With two outs, Ainsley Hinz laced an RBI single up the middle that tied the game at 1-1. 

In the second inning, both teams were sent down in order as Rushman recorded three consecutive groundouts. 

In the top of the third, Greenville recorded two singles and a stolen base then took the 2-1 lead with an RBI single through the right side. Following a stolen base, the Panthers increased their lead to 3-1 with an RBI single. Rushman got out of the inning with a 5u3 doubleplay and groundout back to herself in the circle. 

In the fourth, both teams were held scoreless as Rushman recorded a flyout and two groundouts. 

In the fifth, Greenville recorded a single then increased the deficit to 1-5 with a two-run homerun.  

In the top of the sixth, Rushman recorded a scoreless inning with two groundouts and a flyout. In the bottom half, Errante led off with an infield single then advanced to second on a single by Vanessa Saenz. With two runners on, Hinz ripped an RBi single to right center that made the score 2-5. Moments later, Ava Reinecke laced an RBI single to center that cut the deficit to 3-5. 

In the top of the seventh, Greenville recorded a lead off single and a stolen base then added an RBI single to center that made the score 3-6. 

In the bottom of the seventh, Paige Vogelgesang recorded a one-out single to center when Brie Hale followed up with a walk. With runners on base, both runners added 60 feet on a wild pitch. Moments later, Loiben drew a walk that loaded the bases but the Gorloks did not score which ended the game. 

For the game, Hinz went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI's while Reinecke went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Rushman pitched a complete game and recorded 12 groundouts.  


Game 2: Webster 6, Greenville 4

Senior Madi Stichling earned the start in the circle for game two as she sent down the Panthers in order with a lineout, a bunt coverage out at first, and a flyout. In the bottom half, Loiben recorded a lead off single to right but was left stranded. 

In the top of the second, Greenville took the early 1-0 lead with a solo homer. Stichling then got out of the inning with a popout, a flyout, and a groundout. 

In the bottom of the second, Reinecke led off with a single then advanced to second on a walk drawn by Natalie Puentes. Moments later, Marah Schotz tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single through the left side. With one out and runners on the corner, Hale gave the Gorloks the 2-1 lead with an RBI single to short that scored Puentes. With two runners on, Loiben launched a three-run homerun that generated the 5-1 lead.

In the top of the third, Greenville recorded a bunt single and a double to right center as Stichling shut down the Panthers and stranded those runners with a groundout, popout, and a flyout.

In the top of the fourth, the Panthers recorded a walk and advanced the runner to second. With one out, Greenville got runners on the corners following a Webster error then scored a run on a fielder's choice that made the score 2-5. 

In the bottom of the fourth, Loiben recorded a two-out walk when Errante followed up with a single. With two runners on base, Saenz ripped an RBI single to right that increased the lead to 6-2. 

In the top of the fifth, Greenville recorded a leadoff double then added an RBI double that made the score 6-3. Following a groundout made by Stichling, the Panthers added consecutive singles that cut the lead to 6-4. Webster then made a pitching change to Adriana Rodriguez as she got out of the inning with a strikeout. 

In the top of the sixth, both teams did not score a run as Rodriguez recorded two groundouts and a strikeout. In the top of the seventh, Rodriguez shut the door and sent down the Panthers in order with a groundout, a lineout, and a strikeout that earned the save. 

For the game, Loiben went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer while Hale went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Errante recorded a two-hit game while Saenz and Schotz had one RBI each. In the circle, Stichling pitched 4.2 innings and recorded seven groundouts. Rodriguez pitched 2.1 innings and recorded four strikeouts.
