Gorloks Move on to SLIAC Final

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this evening when they played host to the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for their SLIAC Semifinal matchup. The top seeded Gorloks defeated the sixth seeded Griffins by a final score of 74-58 to improve to 26-0 on the season and advance to the SLIAC Tournament Final. With the loss, the Griffins season comes to an end with a 7-20 overall record.

Webster went 30-for-73 (41.1%) from the floor and 1-for-8 (12.5%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Griffins by a final count of 50-36 with 19 rebounds coming on the offensive end. They forced Fontbonne to turn the ball over 20 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 18 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also scored 50 of their points in the paint while dishing out 14 assists and blocking six shots.

Webster got off to a quick start in this one as they jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first four minutes of the period. The Griffins would battle back and cut the lead to one, but a 13-4 run from Webster to end the quarter would put them up 22-12 heading into the second. The Gorloks would carry over their momentum into the second and started the period on a 16-6 run to extend their lead to 20 late in the half. The Griffins would cut the lead to 18 with a minute to play, but a last second layup from Emily Wilson to end the half put Webster up 40-20 at the break.

The Gorloks came out of the locker room and went on a 14-5 run in the first five minutes of the quarter to extend their lead to 29. The Griffins would end the quarter on a 17-4 run of their own and Webster would take a 16-point lead into the final frame. The teams would go back and fourth in the final frame with both teams scoring 16 points, but the damage was done as the Gorloks held off the Griffins to solidify their spot in the SLIAC Tournament Final.

Julie Baudendistel led the way for Webster as she finished with a game high 21 points to go along with a season high 15 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Emily Wilson and Bethany Lancaster also finished in double figures as Wilson recorded 19 points while Lancaster had 11 to go along with eight rebounds.
