MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Webster University baseball team finished up their road trip in Memphis, Tennessee, this afternoon when they took on the Rhodes (Tenn.) College Lynx for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Lynx by a final score of 7-3 to improve to 3-0 on the season. With the loss, the Rhodes drops to 1-2 on the year.
Rhodes got on the board first in this one as they scored a run in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead early in the game. The Gorloks bounced back in the top of the third as
Karl Peters hit a solo homerun to tie the score at one. Webster would rally for three more runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead, and then a solo homerun from
Nathaniel Martinez in the top of the fifth would extend the lead to 5-1 midway through the game. The Lynx would rally for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to two, but a run in the eighth and a run in the ninth would solidify the weekend sweep for the Gorloks.
Ryan Greifelt (1-0) had a great Gorlok debut on the mound as he allowed just three hits and one earned run while striking out four in 6.0 innings.
Joel Arsenault pitched in relief of Greifelt as he allowed five hits and two earned runs while striking out one.
Caleb Zbrozek closed out the game for Webster as he did not allow a hit while striking out one in the final 1.1 innings of the game.
Webster rallied for 13 hits in the contest.
James Theodore led the way for Webster as he went 4-for-5 with two RBI.
Nathaniel Martinez also had a great game as he went 3-for-5 with a homerun (1) and two RBI. In addition,
Karl Peters went 2-for-5 with a solo homerun (2),
Zach Goodman went 2-for-5 with an RBI, and
Dylan McKee went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Gorloks will be back in action on Friday, March 1
st when they host the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh for their home opener. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Grizzlies Ballpark in Sauget, Ill.
