Gorloks Split Opening Doubleheader in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. – After a getting rained out on Friday, the Webster University softball team kicked off their spring break trip yesterday with a doubleheader in Tucson, Arizona, against Mount Mary (Wis.) University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (N.J.). The Gorloks split the doubleheader as they defeated Mount Mary by a final score of 12-0 (5 inn.) before falling to RPI by a final score of 7-4. With the Split, Webster moved to 6-5-1 on the year.

Webster got off to a great start in their first game of the day as they rallied for three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead. They would add seven runs in the bottom of the second and two runs in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 12. They never let Mount Mary get anything going in the game and cruised to their sixth win of the year.

Cheyenne Dickens (3-0) was the starting pitcher for Webster as she allowed just three hits while striking out two in 3.0 innings. Madi Stichling pitched in relief as she allowed two hits in the final 2.0 innings of the game.

Webster put together 15 hits in the win. Kaelyn Kearney and Lucy St. John both recorded three hit games as Kearney went 3-for-3 with two RBI and St. John went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Katie Croxall and Aurora Lomheim also recorded multi-hit games as Croxall went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Lomheim went 2-for-2 with two RBI. In addition, Emma Bovaconti recorded two RBI while Jaelin Holdaway, Bri Hale and Reese Waggoner each recorded one.

In their second game of the day, Webster found themselves down early as RPI scored a run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. The Gorloks would answer with two runs in the top of the second to take a 2-1 advantage, but a run from the Engineers in the bottom half of the frame tied the score at two. The Gorloks and Engineers would exchange runs in the fourth to keep the score tied, and then a run from Webster in the top of the fifth gave the Gorloks a 4-3 advantage. The Engineers would answer with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and two runs in the bottom of the sixth and closed out the Gorloks down the stretch to solidify the win.

Reese Waggoner (1-2) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed 10 hits and five earned runs while striking out six in 6.0 innings.

Webster was held to seven hits in the contest. Lucy St. John led the way for the Gorloks as she went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Paige Thomas also had a multi-hit game as she went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Lastly, Emma Bovaconti, Kaelyn Kearney, and Madi Stichling each added an RBI.

The Gorloks will have a quick turnaround as they are back in action this morning, March 10th, when they take on St. Catherine (Minn.) University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (N.J.) in Tucson, Ariz. They will take on St. Catherine's at 9 a.m. MST and RPI at 11 a.m. MST.
