ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University softball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the University of Dubuque Spartans for a nonconference doubleheader. The Gorloks swept the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 3-2 before winning the second game by a final score of 7-3 to improve to 11-7-1 on the season. With the sweep, Dubuque falls to 3-7 on the year.
The Gorloks got off to a great start in their first game of the day as
Paige Thomas hit an RBI single in the bottom of the first to give Webster a 1-0 lead. The Spartans would answer with two runs in the third, but an RBI single from
Jaelin Holdaway in the bottom of the fifth would tie the score late in the game. The Gorloks would walk it off in the bottom of the seventh as
Katie Croxall scored on a wild pitch to solidify the win for Webster.
Reese Waggoner (2-3) was the starting pitcher for the Gorloks as she allowed six hits and two earned runs while striking out one in her second complete game of the season.
Webster put together eight hits in the contest.
Katie Croxall and
Emma Bovaconti led the way for Webster as they both recorded multi-hit games. Croxall went 2-for-4 with a run scored while Bovaconti went 2-for-3. In addition,
Paige Thomas and
Jaelin Holdaway both went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The Spartans got on the board first in their second game of the day as they scored a run in the top of the first to take an early lead. The Gorloks would answer with back-to-back RBI singles from
Kaelyn Kearney and
Paige Thomas in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead, but two runs from the Spartans in the top of the second would put them up 3-2 early in the game. Webster would respond with five unanswered runs in the final five innings and cruised to their 11
th win of the year.
Cheyenne Dickens (5-0) got the start in this one as she allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out one in 4.0 innings.
Braidyn Burr pitched in relief as she allowed just one hit in the final 3.0 innings to earn the save.
The Gorloks rallied for 11 hits in the contest.
Jaelin Holdaway led the way for Webster as she went 2-for-2 with three RBI.
Lucy St. John and
Paige Thomas also recorded multi-hit games as St. John went 2-for-3 with two RBI while Thomas went 3-for-3 with an RBI. In addition,
Kaelyn Kearney went 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The Gorloks will return to the diamond on Saturday, March 23
rd when they host Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.) for a nonconference doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 1 p.m. with the second game to follow at St. Joseph's Academy.
