Gorloks Split Series With Lyon

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Batesville, Arkansas, to take on the Lyon (Ark.) College Scots for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks split the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 12-1 (8 inn.) before falling in the second game by a final score of 4-2 to move to 11-10 on the season and 4-2 in the SLIAC.

The Gorloks got off to a great start in the first game of the day as they scored a run in the top of the first, a run in the top of the second, and three runs in the top of the third to jump out to a 5-0 lead. The Scots would answer with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but seven runs from the Gorloks in the final four innings would solidify the win for Webster.

Jordan Smevoll (2-2) got the win in this one as he allowed just four hits and one earned run while striking out three in 6.0 innings. Adam Hill pitched in relief as he allowed just one hit while striking out one in the final 2.0 innings of the game.

Webster rallied for 13 hits in the game. Parker Murrow, R.J. LaRocco, Evan Evola, and Zach Goodman all recorded multi-hit games as Murrow went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, LaRocco went 3-for-5 with two RBI, Evola went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Goodman went 2-for-4 with a solo homerun (3). In addition, James Theodore recorded two RBI, Nathaniel Martinez went 1-for-4 with a three-run homerun (5), Andrew Fazio went 1-for-4 with a two-run homerun (1), and Caleb Zbrozek went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

After three scoreless innings to start the second game, Webster got on the board first in the top of the fourth as R.J. LaRocco hit a sacrifice fly to put the Gorloks up 1-0 early. The Scots would tie the score in the bottom half of the inning and then added three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 4-1 advantage. Webster would cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the eighth, but the Scots picked up the final outs of the game to solidify the split.

Carter hunt got the start in this one as he did not allow a hit in the first inning of the game. Wes Cunningham, Joel Arsenault (1-1), and Caleb Zbrozek pitched in relief as the three combined to allow seven hits and four earned runs while striking out four in the final seven innings of the game.

Webster was held to eight hits in the game. Karl Peters and Andrew Fazio both recorded multi-hit games as Peters went 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Fazio went 2-for-3. R.J. LaRocco and Parker Murrow recorded the RBI for Webster as they both went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Gorloks will return to the field on Tuesday, April 2nd when they host Rhodes (Tenn.) College for a nonconference doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 12 p.m. with the second game to follow.
