Gorloks Swept at Spalding

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action yesterday when they traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for a rematch of last years SLIAC Championship Final. The Gorloks were swept by the Golden Eagles as they fell in the first game by a final score of 7-4 and the second game by a final score of 9-2 to drop to 11-12 on the season and 4-4 in the SLIAC. The sweep moves Spalding to 16-10 on the season and 8-0 in conference play.

Spalding got on the board first in the first game of the day as they scored two runs in the bottom of the second to take an early lead. Webster would cut the lead in half in the top of the sixth, but five runs over the next two innings would put Spalding up 7-1 late in the contest. The Gorloks would answer with three runs in the top of the eighth, but the Golden Eagles picked up the final outs of the game to solidify the win.

Ryan Greifelt (2-2) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed two hits and two earned runs while striking out four in 3.1 innings. Jordan Smevoll and Jeremy Yanow pitched in relief as the two combined to allow six hits and two earned runs while striking out five in the final 4.2 innings of the contest.

The Gorloks were held to just five hits in the contest. James Theodore and Karl Peters led the way at the plate as Peters went 1-for-3 with two RBI while Theodore went 2-for-4 with an RBI. In addition, Nick Schumacher went 1-for-1 with an RBI and Zach Goodman scored two runs.

Webster got off to a good start in the second game of the day as Parker Murrow hit an RBI single to put the Gorloks up 1-0 in the top of the first. The Golden Eagles would answer with two runs in the bottom of the first, one run in the bottom of the third, and one run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-1 advantage. Evan Evola would cut the lead in half with his second homerun of the season in the top of the sixth, but two runs from the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the frame put Spalding up 6-2 heading into the seventh. Webster would score another run in the top of the seventh, but the Golden Eagles would pick up three more runs in the bottom half of the frame to solidify the sweep.

Kevin Corcoran (2-3) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed five hits and three earned runs while striking out eight in 5.0 innings. Joel Arsenault, Wes Carter, and Cade Gebhard pitched in relief as the three combined to allow three hits and four earned runs while striking out four in the final 3.0 innings of the game.

Webster put together nine hits in the contest. James Theodore and Evan Evola led the way for the Gorloks as Theodore went 3-for-5 with a run scored while Evola went 3-for-4 with two RBI. In addition, Parker Murrow went 1-for-4 with an RBI and Karl Peters went 1-for-5 with a run scored.

The Gorloks will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 9th when they host the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers for a SLIAC doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 1 p.m. with the second to follow at Grizzlies Ballpark.
