Gorloks Sweep Blackburn

SAUGET, Ill. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks swept the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 19-2 (7 inn.) and the second game by a final score of 15-5 (7 inn.) to improve to 13-12 on the season and 6-4 in conference play. With the sweep, Blackburn drops to 3-21 on the year and 0-10 in the SLIAC.

The Gorloks got off to a great start in the first game of the day as they scored a run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Karl Peters would extend the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the second with his fifth homerun of the season and then a solo homerun from Evan Evola (3) just two batters later put Webster up 5-0 in the game. The Beavers would cut the lead to 5-2 over the next two innings, but 11 runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth solidified the win for the Gorloks.

Jordan Smevoll (3-2) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed seven hits and two earned runs while striking out three in 5.0 innings. Adam Hill and Mason Young pitched in relief as the two combined to allow just one hit while striking out four in 2.0 innings.

Webster tallied 12 hits in the contest. James Theodore, Evan Evola, and Nick Schumacher all recorded multi-hit games as Theodore went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Evola went 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Schumacher went 2-for-4 with three RBI. In addition, Karl Peters went 1-for-3 with a three-run homerun, Paul Rice went 1-for-1 with two RBI, Ben Stedman went 1-for-1 with an RBI, and Andrew Fazio went 1-for-2 with an RBI while Cullen McBride and R.J. LaRocco each added an RBI.

The Gorloks carried over their momentum into the second game as they scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. The Beavers would answer with three runs in the top of the second, but a two-run homerun from Karl Peters (6) in the bottom of the frame would put Webster up 5-3. Zach Goodman would hit his fourth homerun of the season to extend the Gorlok lead to five in the bottom of the third and then an RBI single from Nick Schumacher in the bottom of the fourth put Webster up 9-3 in the game. The Beavers would go on to score two runs in the top of the fifth, but six runs over the next two innings solidified the win for the Gorloks.

Shane LeJeune-DeAcutis got the start in this one as he allowed four hits and two earned runs while striking out three in 2.1 innings. Joel Arsenault (2-0), Jeremy Yanow, Carter Hunt, and Caleb Zbrozek pitched in relief as the three combined to allow three hits and two earned runs while striking out seven in 4.2 innings.

Webster rallied for 10 hits in the game. Karl Peters led the way as he went 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored. In addition, James Theodore went 1-for-3 with an RBI, Nick Schumacher went 1-for-3 with two RBI, Zach Goodman went 1-for-2 with a three-run homerun, Nathaniel Martinez went 1-for-2 with an RBI, and Evan Evola recorded an RBI.

The Gorloks will return to the diamond on Saturday, April 13th when travel to Fulton, Missouri, to take on the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a SLIAC doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 1 p.m. with the second game to follow.
