ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University softball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks swept the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 3-2 (8 inn.) and the second game by a final score of 2-1 to improve to 18-7-1 on the season and 5-0 in SLIAC play. With the sweep, Spalding drops to 15-15 on the season.
Webster got on the board first in the first game of the day as
Jaelin Holdaway hit an RBI single in the bottom of the third to give the Gorloks a 1-0 lead. Spalding would answer with two runs in the top of the fourth, but a run from Webster in the bottom of the seventh sent the game to extras.
Katie Croxall would hit a sacrifice fly to score
Reese Waggoner in the bottom of the eighth and the Gorloks would solidify their ninth straight win.
Reese Waggoner (4-3) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed just seven hits and two earned runs while striking out 10 in her fourth complete game of the season.
Webster rallied for seven hits in the game.
Lucy St. John and
Madi Stichling recorded multi-hit games as St. John went 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Stichling went 2-for-2. In addition,
Katie Croxall,
Jaelin Holdaway, and
Emma Bovaconti each recorded an RBI.
After three scoreless innings to start the game, the Golden Eagles got on the board in the top of the fourth as they scored a run to take a 1-0 lead. The Gorloks answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and held Spalding off the board in the top of the seventh to solidify the sweep.
Braidyn Burr (4-2) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed just two hits while striking out two in her third complete game of the season.
The Gorloks tallied seven hits in the contest.
Paige Thomas,
Jaelin Holdaway, and
Alyssa Lyell accounted for six of the Gorloks hits as Thomas went 2-for-3, Holdaway went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Lyell went 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Emma Bovaconti recorded the seventh hit for Webster.
The Gorloks will return to the diamond on Wednesday, April 17
th when they travel to St. Ann, Missouri, to take on the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for a SLIAC doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 3 p.m. with the second to follow.
