Gorloks Swept at Fontbonne

ST. ANN, Mo. – The Webster University softball team was back in action yesterday when they traveled to St. Ann, Missouri, to take on the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks were swept by the Griffins as they fell in the first game by a final score of 5-2 and the second game by a final score of 7-4 to fall to 18-9-1 on the season and 5-2 in the SLIAC. With the sweep, Fontbonne improves to 14-15 overall and 9-1 in conference play.

The Gorloks got off to a slow start in the first game of the day as the Griffins scored five runs through the first four innings to take an early lead. Webster had a tough time getting anything going throughout the game but were finally able to break into the scoring column in the top of the fifth when Paige Thomas hit an RBI double to cut the lead to 5-1. Sidney Holtz would cut the lead to three with an RBI double in the top of the sixth but the Griffins held off Webster down the stretch to solidify the win.

Madi Stichling (2-1) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed 12 hits and five earned runs in her third complete game of the season.

Webster was held to just four hits in the contest. Paige Thomas led the way as she went 2-for-4 with an RBI. In addition, Sidney Holtz went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Katie Croxall went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

The Griffins carried over their momentum into the second game of the day as they scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. The Gorloks would answer with a run in the top of the second, but four runs over the next two innings put the Griffins up 7-1 midway through the contest. Webster would go on to score three runs in the final two innings but it was not enough as Fontbonne picked up the final outs of the game to solidify the sweep.

Cheyenne Dickens (5-1) was in the circle for this one to start as she allowed four hits and four earned runs in 1.2 innings. Ainsley Hinz pitched in relief as se allowed six hits and three earned runs while striking out one in the final 4.1 innings of the game.

Webster recorded eight hits in the game. Jaelin Holdaway led the way for Webster as she went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Paige Thomas also recorded a multi-hit game as she went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Lastly, Madi Stichling went 1-for-4 with an RBI and Aurora Lomheim went 1-for-1 with an RBI.

The Gorloks will return to the diamond on Monday, April 22nd when they travel to Columbus, Mississippi, to take on the Mississippi University for Women Owls for a SLIAC doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 11 am with the second game to follow.
