Gorloks Sweep Owls in Mississippi

COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Webster University softball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Columbus, Mississippi, to take on the Mississippi University for Women Owls for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks swept the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 6-4 (8 inn.) and the second game by a final score of 6-5 to improve to 20-9-1 on the season and 7-2 in conference play.

The Owls got on the board first in the first game of the day as they scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead. Webster would answer with a run in the top of the second and three runs in the top of the fourth to tie the score at four. The game would remain tied until the eighth inning when the Gorloks rallied for two runs in the top of the frame to solidify the win.

Reese Waggoner (5-3) was in the circle to start this one as she allowed just six hits and three earned runs while striking out four in her fifth complete game of the season.

Webster rallied for nine hits in the contest. Reese Waggoner led the way for the Gorloks as she went 1-for-4 with three RBI. In addition to Waggoner, Kaelyn Kearney went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, Emma Bovaconti went 1-for-2 with an RBI, and Sidney Holtz went 2-for-3 with an RBI to round out the top performers for the Gorloks.

Webster carried their momentum over into the second game as they scored four runs in the top of the first to take an early lead. The Owls would answer with four runs in the bottom of the third, but two runs from Webster in the top of the sixth put the Gorloks up 6-4 midway through the contest. MUW would score a run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to one, but Webster recorded the final outs of the game to solidify the sweep.

Braidyn Burr (5-2) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed 10 hits and two earned runs while striking out two in her fourth complete game of the season.

Webster put together eight hits in the contest. Lucy St. John led the way as she went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. In addition, Reese Waggoner went 1-for-3 with two RBI, Abigail Chandler went 1-for-2 with an RBI, Paige Thomas went 1-for-4 with an RBI, and Jaelin Holdaway went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Gorloks will return to the diamond on Wednesday, April 24th when they host the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a SLIAC doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 3 p.m. with the second game to follow.
