Gorloks Split With Greenville

SAUGET, Ill. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action yesterday when they played host to the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks split the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 6-4 before falling in the second game by a final score of 12-4. With the split, Webster moves to 16-14 on the year and 8-6 in conference play.

The Gorloks got off to slow start in the first game of the day as the Panthers scored two runs in the top of the first to take an early lead. Webster would answer with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame, but another two runs from the Panthers in the top of the fourth put them up 4-2 in the contest. Webster would go on to score two runs in the bottom of the fourth and two runs in the bottom of the sixth to solidify the win.

Ryan Greifelt got the start in this one as he allowed seven hits and four earned runs while striking out one in 4.2 innings. Caleb Zbrozek (2-1) picked up the win as he allowed four hits while striking out seven in 4.1 scoreless innings.

Webster tallied 10 hits in the game. James Theodore led the way as he went 2-for-5 with two RBI. In addition, Parker Murrow went 2-for-5 with an RBI, R.J. LaRocco went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Evan Evola went 2-for-2 with an RBI, and Nick Schumacher went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Panthers got on the board first in the second game as they scored a run in the top of the first to take an early lead. Webster would answer with two runs in the bottom of the first, but three runs from the Panthers in the top of the third put them up 4-2 in the game. Evan Evola would cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth with his fourth homerun of the season, but two more runs from the Panthers in the top of the fifth extended the Greenville lead to 6-3 midway through the game. The Panthers would outscore Webster 6-1 down the stretch and solidified the split.

Kevin Corcoran (3-4) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed eight hits and six earned runs while striking out one in 5.0 innings. Jordan Smevoll and Adam Hill pitched in relief as the two combined to allow seven hits and six earned runs while striking out seven in the final 4.0 innings of the game.

Webster was held to just eight hits in the contest. James Theodore had the only multi-hit game for the Gorloks as he went 2-for-6 with two runs scored. In addition, Nathaniel Martinez went 1-for-3 with two RBI, Evan Evola went 1-for-3 with a solo homerun (4), and R.J. LaRocco went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

The Gorloks will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 23rd when they travel across town to take on the Maryville (Mo.) University Saints. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. on the campus of Maryville University.
