Gorloks Sweep Season Finale

SAUGET, Ill. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action on Saturday when they played host to the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks swept the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 7-4 and the second game by a final score of 12-2 (7 inn.) to improve to 22-17 on the season and 12-6 in conference play.
 
The Red Devil got on the board first in this one as they scored a run in the top of the second and two runs in the top of the third to take a 3-0 lead early in the game. Nick Schumacher would cut the lead to 3-2 with a two-run homerun (2) in the bottom of the fourth, but another run from the Red Devils in the top of the fifth extended the lead back to two midway through the contest. Webster would go on to score five runs over the next two innings and held the Red Devils off the board to solidify the win.
 
Ryan Greifelt (4-3) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed seven hits and four earned runs while striking out six in 8.0 innings. Caleb Zbrozek picked up the save (3) as he did not allow a baserunner in the final inning of the game.
 
Webster put together nine hits in the game. James Theodore and Nick Schumacher led the way as Theodore went 3-for-5 with two runs scored while Schumacher went 2-for-4 with a two-run homerun (2). In addition, R.J. LaRocco went 1-for-3 with an RBI, Ben Stedman went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Parker Murrow added two RBI to round out the top performers for Webster.
 
The Gorloks got off to another slow start in the second game of the day as Eureka scored a run in the top of the first to take an early lead. Webster would go on to score one run in the bottom of the first, four runs in the bottom of the second, four runs in the bottom of the fifth, and two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take an 11-1 lead in the game. The Red Devils would score in the top of the seventh, but a run from Webster in the bottom half of the frame solidified the sweep.
 
Kevin Corcoran (5-4) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed four hits and one earned run while striking out five in 4.1 innings. Jordan Smevoll, Adam Hill, and Michael Ellis pitched in relief as the three combined to allow two hits and one earned run while striking out one in the final 2.2 innings of the game.
 
Webster put together 14 hits in the game. James Theodore, Parker Murrow, and Nathaniel Martinez led the way as Theodore went 3-for-4 with three RBI, Murrow went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Nathaniel Martinez went 2-for-4 with a two-run homerun (15). In addition, Karl Peters went 2-for-4 with a run scored, Evan Evola recorded an RBI, and Ben Stedman went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
 
This marks the end of the regular season for the Webster baseball team. They have earned the second seed in the SLIAC Tournament and will host the second lowest remaining seed on Thursday, May 9th at 5:30 p.m. at CarShield Field in O'Fallon, Missouri
