CARLINVILLE, Ill. – The Webster University softball team was back in action on Sunday when they traveled to Carlinville, Illinois, to take on the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers for their final SLIAC doubleheader of the regular season. The Gorloks swept the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 1-0 and the second game by final score of 6-4 to improve to 24-12-1 on the season and 11-5 in conference play.
The Gorloks got on the board early in this one as
Alyssa Lyell hit an RBI single in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. They played tough defense throughout the game and were able to hold the Beavers off the board to solidify the win.
Reese Waggoner (7-4) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed just eight hits while striking out eight in her second complete game shutout of the season.
Webster recorded eight hits in the game.
Katie Croxall,
Paige Thomas, and
Alyssa Lyell led the way for Webster as Croxall went 2-for-4, Thomas went 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Lyell went 2-for-3 with an RBI. In addition,
Jaelin Holdaway and
Sidney Holtz recorded the final two hits for Webster.
The Gorloks found themselves trailing early in the second game as the Beavers scored a run in the bottom of the first and a run in the bottom of the fourth to take an early lead. Webster would cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth, but two runs from the Beavers in the bottom of the sixth gave them a 4-1 advantage late in the game. The Gorloks answered with five runs in the top of the seventh and held the Beavers off the board to solidify the sweep.
Braidyn Burr (6-3) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed six hits and four earned runs while striking out one in her sixth complete game of the season.
Webster put together 10 hits in the game.
Madi Stichling,
Jaelin Holdaway, and
Kaelyn Kearney led the way at the plate as Stichling went 2-for-3 with two RBI, Holdaway went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Kearney went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Lastly,
Lili Work went 1-for-1 with an RBI and a run scored.
This marks the end of the regular season for the softball team. They have earned the third seed in the SLIAC Tournament and will face the sixth seeded Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers for their SLIAC Quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday, May 7
th. The game is set to start at 3:30 p.m. at the Chesterfield Valley Athletic Complex.
