ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University softball team kicked off postseason play yesterday when they played host to the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers in the SLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals. The third seeded Gorloks defeated the sixth seeded Beavers by a final score of 4-2 to advance to the SLIAC Tournament Semifinals in Louisville, Kentucky.
The Beavers got on the board first in this one as they scored a run in the top of the first to take an early lead. They would go on to add a second run in the top of the fifth and held a 2-0 advantage late in the contest. The Gorloks had a tough time getting anything going through the first five innings but their bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth as they rallied for four runs in the frame to take their first lead of the game. They kept Blackburn off the board in the top of the seventh and solidified their spot in the SLIAC Semifinals.
Reese Waggoner (8-4) was the starting pitcher in this one as she allowed seven hits and two earned runs while striking out five in her eighth complete game of the season.
Webster put together nine hits in the contest.
Jaelin Holdaway led the way as she went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. In addition,
Emma Bovaconti went 1-for-3 with two RBI while
Reese Waggoner added an RBI.
The third seeded Gorloks will be back in action on Thursday, May 9
th when they travel to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on the second seeded Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers. The game is set to start at 6:30 p.m. EST.
