Gorloks Fall Short To Carroll In Illinois College Invitational Finale

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The Gorloks volleyball team concluded action at the 2024 Illinois College Invitational with a decision against Carroll University. The Gorloks battled the Pioneers fiercely and scored at least 20 points in each set but dropped the match in straight sets. The Gorloks now stand at 2-1 overall on the season.   

In the early moments of the match, both teams battled to a 5-5 tie when the Gorloks answered with five unanswered points. First-year Leah McGrath started the rally with a kill and later ended the run with a block. In between McGrath's points, Jaycee Lewis and Olivia Powell each hammered down a kill. Moments later, Alyssa Jones extended the Gorloks lead to 12-6 with back-to-back points; a block and a kill. 

The Pioneers chipped back in the set with a 5-0 run that cut the lead down to one at 13-12.In the middle portion of this set, both teams battled point-for-point that generated a four-point Gorloks advantage at 22-18. However, Carroll used a late offensive push and closed out the first set on a 7-1 run to take the set by the score of 25-23.   

The Gorloks jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the second set that included kills from Zablonski, and Tyler Ramstack which was followed up with a service ace by Delaney Morio. The Pioneers countered with an 8-2 run that generated a two-point deficit at 8-10. Moments later, Eva Tarlos tied the set at 10 apiece with back-to-back kills as White gave Webster the 12-10 lead with a kill.

Following the kill by Ramstack, Carroll answered with four straight points that took the 16-14 lead. Three points later, the Pioneers added another 5-0 run that put the score at 16-22. A late offensive push by Webster came up just short as Carroll won the set by the score of 20-25. 

The third set opened up with both teams exchanging points to a 4-4 tie. However, the Pioneers answered with a 8-1 run that made the score 5-12. The Gorloks were able to cut the deficit down to four on five separate occasions with the last at 13-17. The Pioneers extended their lead to six at 20-14 but gave four back to Webster with four straight errors that made the score 18-20. In the final  moments of the set, the Gorlok's attempt for a late offensive push fell just short. 

For the match, White and Tarlos led the offensive unit with six kills each as Zablonski added five. Biendenstein led the team with 14 assists as Morio contributed nine. Defensively, Zablonski and Lewis collected digs apiece while Powell recorded a team-high three blocks. 

The Gorloks will continue non-conference play hosting Rose-Hulman for the home opener on Wednesday, September 4 at 7:00 PM in Grant Gymnasium.
