Gorloks Volleyball Earn Five Set Victory Over Rose-Hulman In Home Opener

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster volleyball team rallied behind their home crowd for the first time this season and defeated the Fightin' Engineers of Rose-Hulman in five sets by the final of 3-2. With this victory, the Gorloks stand at 3-1 on the season. 

Webster opened the match with a 7-1 run as Eva Tarlos and Leah McGrath both recorded two kills each. However, Rose-Hulman fought back and cut the lead down to four at 14-10. The Gorloks countered with a 7-2 run as McGrath and Alyssa Jones tallied a kill that gave Webster the 21-12 advantage. WU's Grace White added a kill while three Fightin' Engineers errors closed out the set by the score of 25-16. 

In the second set, both teams battled point-for-point to a tie at seven apiece. Webster gained the three-point advantage at 10-7 on three errors by Rose-Hulman. The Fightin' Engineers responded with a 7-1 run that took the lead 14-11 advantage. The Gorloks knotted the set at 13 apiece on an attacking error by RHIT and back-to-back kills by Tarlos and Megan Zablonski. Rose-Hulman answered with a 9-3 run that earned the advantage at 23-17. Both teams exchanged points as RHIT took the set by the score of 25-19. 

Rose-Hulman jumped out the early 9-5 advantage in the third set when the Gorloks constructed a 5-0 run as Delaney Morio gave Webster the 10-9 lead with a kill. In the middle of the set, RHIT erupted for an 8-1 run that made the score 19-14. Shortly later, Rose-Hulman closed out the set with a 6-2 run that granted a 2-1 set advantage. 

The fourth set started with a back-and-forth battle to a 3-3 tie. Moments later, Webster erupted for a 9-2 run lead by three kills by White while Zablonski added two that made the score 12-5. Both teams continued to battle as RHIT cut the Gorlok advantage down to five on three separate occasions at 16-11, 18-13, and 21-16. Webster evened the match at two sets a piece with a 4-0 run that included a kill from Lauren Harms and back-to-back service aces by Tarlos.  

The final set began with both teams exchanging points to a tie at two apiece. Moments later, the Gorloks erupted for a 7-1 run to the score 9-3 that included three service aces; two by Tarlos and one by Morio and three kills as Harms, White, and Zablonski each added one. 

The Fightin' Engineers clawed back in the set with a 9-2 run that tied the set at 11 apiece. The Gorloks fed off the home crowd and closed out the match with a 4-1 run that started on a kill by Ellie Biedenstein and capped off with the match-winning kill by Jones. 

For the match, Tarlos led the team with 12 kills and Zablonski added eight. Defensively, Jaycee Lewis collected a team-high 29 digs while Tarlos led with four blocks. 

The Gorloks will travel to Illinois Wesleyan University on Friday September 6 to participate in the IWU Tournament with the first draw against Loras College starting 6:00PM in Bloomington, Illinois.
