Webster Falls To Loras In Competitive Road Match At IWU

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Webster University volleyball team opened tournament play at the Illinois Wesleyan University Crafted Classic with a decision against Loras College. The Gorloks battled the Duhawks fiercely but dropped the competitive match in straight sets.  

The Gorloks got off to a slow start and got in a 0-4 deficit which was stopped on a kill by Alyssa Jones. Webster battled back in the set and cut the deficit down to one at 6-7. However, the Duhawks responded with a 5-0 run that made the score 6-12. 

Moments later, first-year Leah McGrath started an 11-2 Gorlok run with a service ace while Olivia Powell added two kills. The Gorloks tied the set at 13 apiece on a double block by Megan Zablonski and Eva Tarlos. Webster took their first lead of the match at 14-13 on a double block by Delaney Morio and Grace White as White added a kill two plays later that made that score 17-14. 

Immediately following the Webster run, Loras countered with a 4-0 run that took the 18-17 lead. Both teams battled point-for-point to a tie at 20 apiece. However, the Duhawks closed out the set with five unanswered points that took the set. 

In the second set, the Gorloks jumped out to a 5-3 lead that included a 4-0 run started on a kill by McGrath which was capped off with back-to-back kills by Powell and Jones. Both teams exchanged points and rallied to a tie at 13 apiece. 

On the next play, the Duhawks opened the set up with a 10-2 run that made the score 15-23. The Gorloks answered with a 4-0 run that included back-to-back kills from Tarlos and a service ace by Ellie Biedenstein but dropped the set by the score of 19-25. 

Webster and Loras started the final set battling back-and-forth to a tie at nine apiece. The Duhawks opened the set up with a 7-0 run that made the score 9-16. The Gorloks battled back fiercely and cut the deficit down to three at 16-19. However, Loras answered with a 5-1 run that closed out the competitive match.

For the match, Webster was led offensively by McGrath with six kills while Powell and Zablonski added five. Defensively, Jaycee Lewis collected a match-high 14 digs as Powell and Tarlos recorded four blocks each.  

The Gorloks will close out tournament action with two matches on Saturday, with the first opponent in Depauw University at 10:00AM which will be followed by the host, IWU at 1:00PM in Shirk Arena.
