Gorloks Volleyball Conclude Tournament Play At IWU Crafted Classic

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Webster volleyball team closed out tournament play at the 2024 Illinois Wesleyan University Crafted Classic with a pair of non-conference matches against DePauw University and the host, IWU on Saturday in Shirk Arena. The Gorloks faced tough competition and dropped both matches on the day.

Match 1: Webster 0, DePauw 3

The Gorloks opened the match with a 3-0 run that included a kill by Eva Tarlos and a service ace from Ellie Biedenstein. However, DePauw countered with a 5-0 run that made the score 3-5. Webster battled back in the set to a one-point deficit at 6-7 that featured kills by Lauren Harms and Olivia Powell. 

Moments later, the Tigers increased the deficit back to six at 6-12 with a 5-0 run. Both teams went point-for-point to the score 10-14 before DePauw answered with another 5-0 run that opened the set to 10-19. The Gorloks added kills from Tarlos and Powell late in the set but the Tigers took the opening set by the score 14-25. 

Webster started the second set with a 5-2 run that included two service aces by Megan Zablonski and Tarlos while Alyssa Jones added a kill. DePauw immediately answered with a 9-2 run that made the score 7-11. The Gorloks cut the deficit down to one at 10-11 that featured back-to-back kills by Delaney Fullenkamp and Tarlos. However, the Tigers countered with a 7-0 run that made the score 10-18. The Gorloks added points from Biedenstein and Lauren Brown but the Tigers won the set. 

In the final set, the Tigers jumped out to a 7-2 advantage when McGrath added two points with two kills as Harms added a kill to the score 5-9. However, DePauw stretched the lead to double-digits with a 8-2 run that made the score 7-17. Webster got their final points of the match on kills from Harms, McGrath, Fullenkamp and Elicia Theroff while Kate Moleski added a service ace. 

For the match, the Gorloks were led by Tarlos with five kills while Harms and McGrath added three each. Defensively, Harms collected a team-high six digs while Delaney Morio contributed five. 

Match 2: Webster 0, Illinois Wesleyan 3

The second match of the day did not start off in the Gorloks favor as Webster trailed 8-2 as the points came on kills from Zablonski and Tarlos. The Titan increased the deficit to double-digits and never looked back. Webster gained the final points of the set on kills from Jones, Powell, and Fullenkamp but dropped the opening set. 

Early in the second set, the Gorloks eliminated a 2-6 deficit with a 4-0 run that tied the set at six apiece that included a kill by Grace White and a service ace by Cloey Asplin. Webster and IWU battled to the score 7-10 when the Gorloks answered with a 6-2 run that gave WU their first lead of the match at 13-11. In the run, Webster gained points on kills from White, Zablonski, and Tarlos while Lewis and Fullenkamp added a service ace each. For the remainder of the set, both teams went point-for-point to the set score of 23 apiece. Moments later, Powell tied the set at 24 all with a kill as the Titans scored the final two points of the set for the set victory. 

The final set of the match started off with an 11-2 advantage by the Titans as Jones snapped the run with a kill. However, IWU countered with another 8-0 run that was stopped on a kill by Fullenkamp at 4-19. Moments later, the Gorloks answered a 4-0 run that included two service aces by Fullenkamp. Two plays later, Webster constructed another 4-0 run but the Titans scored the final two points of the set to win the match.  

For the match, the Gorloks were led by Powell, Zablonski, and McGrath with three kills each while Morio added three service aces. Defensively, Jaycee Lewis secured a game-high 11 digs while Zablonski collected eight. 

The Gorloks will have a three-day layover before traveling across town to face off the Eutectics of University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy on Tuesday September 10 at 6:00PM in St. Louis, Missouri.
