Gorloks Extend Unbeaten Streak To Six Games With Shutout Victory Over Aurora

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's soccer team opened a three-game homestand with a 2-0 victory over Aurora University Saturday afternoon at WWT Soccer Park. With the victory, the Gorloks remain unbeaten and improve to 4-0-2 overall this season. First-year student-athletes Claire Thurmond and Lucy Elfrink both scored their first collegiate goals of their careers which ended up being the only scoring for the match.

In the opening minutes of action, the Gorloks got the ball into the attacking zone when the back-to-back SLIAC Offensive Players of the Week in Malaya Blakely and Grace Rodgers both took a shot but both went wide. In the 11th and 12th minutes, Rodgers had two additional great scoring opportunities as her third shot of the contest blasted off the top cross bar that kept the match scoreless.

In the 27th minute, the Spartans put together a great offensive attack that resulted in a shot by Arizbeth Sanchez which was Aurora's first shot of the match. The Gorloks and Spartans battled between the end lines until the final minute of the first half.

With under one minute to go in the first half, the Gorloks advanced the ball into the attacking zone when Thurmond cracked the scoring with a goal that was assisted by Emily Buchholz which gave Webster the 1-0 advantage at halftime.

The Gorloks and Spartans opened the second half exchanging corner kicks as Webster added shots from Isabella Dickneite, Payton Montana, and Blakely. In the 62nd minute, Elfrink blasted an absolute rocket to the upper right portion of the net that stretched the back of the net which gave Webster the 2-0 lead that was assisted by Mia Smith

For the remainder of the match, the Gorloks only allowed one shot on goal which was cleared out of the box. Webster defended two additional corner kicks by the Spartans that led to the second shutout victory of the season.

For the match, Rodgers led the offensive attack with four shots while Elfrink contributed three. Defensively, the Gorloks were very impressive and only allowed two shots. As a team, the Gorloks outshot the Spartans 16-2 as seven shots were on goal.

The Gorloks will have an entire week of preparation before hosting Nebraska Wesleyan University on Saturday, September 21 at 12:00 PM (noon) for the middle stanza decision of the homestand.
