Gorloks Secure Third Shutout Of The Season With 3-0 Victory Over Prairie Wolves

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's soccer team continued non-conference play by hosting Nebraska Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon at World Wide Technology Soccer Park. The Gorloks captured their fifth win of the season with a 3-0 victory over the Prairie Wolves. With the victory, Webster extends their unbeaten streak to seven matches and improves to 5-0-2 on the season. 

Webster and Nebraska Wesleyan battled for possession in the early going until the seventh minute. Seconds later, the Gorloks worked together and formed a strong offensive attack that resulted in a goal by Grace Rodgers that opened the scoring for the 1-0 advantage which was assisted by Lucy Elfrink. That goal by Rodgers marks her fourth of the season.

Four minutes later, in the 11th minute, the Gorloks increased the lead to 2-0 on a goal by Sienna Inouye that was assisted by Payton Montana. Shortly later, Webster sent the ball into the attacking side of the pitch when Montana collected the ball and blasted a shot toward net that was saved by Catthi Pham as Elfrink's follow up shot went just high. 

For the remainder of the half, the Gorloks had scoring opportunities on shots by Isabella Dickneite, Mayrin Soto, and Montana but all shots went wide. In the 42 minute, the Prairie Wolves recorded their first shot of the match off the foot of Mady Schoffstall as it went wide. Webster took the 2-0 lead into halftime. 

NWU came out in the second half with an aggressive offensive attack that resulted in a shot by Averie Hike when WU's goalkeeper Courtney Haneline made an incredible diving save that eliminated the scoring opportunity for the Prairie Wolves. 


In the 52nd minute, the Gorloks earned a corner kick when Rodgers delivered a fantastic entry pass that found the head of Montana for a goal that gave Webster the 3-0 lead as Rodgers was credited with the assist. With that goal by Montana, she is now tied with Rodgers for a team-leading four goals on the season.  


Moments later, NWU's Hike had another great scoring opportunity but was eliminated by Haneline with an impressive diving save that kept the shutout intact. The Gorloks stayed aggressive in the attacking zone that resulted in five shots by five different student-athletes; Riley Cappozzo, Isabelle Schumacher, Mia Smith, Claire Thurmond, and Mackenzie Sundhausen. For the remainder of the match, the Gorloks' defense held strong that led to the shutout victory.  

 
For the match, Montana led the offensive attack with five shots while Lucy Elfrink contributed three while Rodgers added two. In net, Haneline recorded two saves and earned her third shutout of the season. 

The Gorloks will close out this three-game homestand on Wednesday, September 25 hosting the number one team in the nation in Washington University of St. Louis at 6:00PM at WWT Soccer Park.
